Tasting notes

Ruby with good clarity and a violet-tinged edge. The nose is fresh and precise, with red cherry, pepper spice, a minty herbal note, and a dusty granite-like minerality characteristic of high-altitude Valtellina. The palate is juicy and vibrant, with crisp acidity, fine texture, and a clean, mineral finish.

Taste profile
  • Style: Dry, medium-bodied red with a bright, mineral-driven character; juicy and vivid on the palate, with a freshness and lift that reflects both the altitude of the vineyard and the intrinsic qualities of the Ròssola grape
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Ròssola (indigenous Valtellina variety, also known as Ròssolino and Ròssolino Rosa); Liom vineyard, 700–800 metres above sea level; steep dry-stone terraces; sandy, loamy granite soils rich in silica; organic farming, all work by hand
  • Winemaking: Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in amphorae; aged in the same amphorae; bottled unfined and unfiltered; minimal sulfur additions only
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 57–61°F; 15 to 20 minutes' decanting opens up its aromatic profile; can also be served with a light chill at around 55°F given its fresh, mineral character
  • Pairing: Pizzoccheri valtellinesi
  • Similar to: A lighter-styled northern Rhône red or a natural Pinot Noir from an alpine site; both comparisons capture the Liom's combination of red fruit, herbal freshness, and dusty granite minerality

Barbacàn Liom 2022 is a dry red wine made from 100% Ròssola, a rare indigenous variety of the Valtellina that the Sega family has recovered and continues to cultivate. Produced by Barbacàn in San Giacomo di Teglio, in the Valgella subzone, the grapes grow on steep, dry-stone-terraced slopes at 700 to 800 metres above sea level in sandy granite soils rich in silica. Hand-harvested, the wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation in amphorae and is aged in the same vessels. Barbacàn Liom 2022 is classified as Alpi Retiche IGT, bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur. 13% ABV.

Pizzoccheri valtellinesi, bresaola with rocket and Parmigiano, Korean bibimbap, roasted mushrooms, grilled trout, charcuterie, rabbit with herbs.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Barbacan

Barbacàn is the family project of Angelo Sega and his sons Luca and Matteo, based in San Giacomo di Teglio in the Valgella subzone of Valtellina. The winery's name comes from the local dialect term for the stone buttressing walls that hold up the ancient terraces on which their vines grow, which is as clear a statement of intent as any producer could make. The estate covers approximately seven hectares of steep, terraced vineyards between 400 and 750 metres above sea level, all worked entirely by hand. Everything from pruning and canopy management to harvest is done without machinery.

The Sega family works primarily with Chiavennasca, the local biotype of Nebbiolo that has been cultivated in Valtellina since medieval times. They maintain over 20 different Chiavennasca clones in their vineyards, preserving a genetic diversity that would otherwise be at risk of disappearing. Alongside Chiavennasca, they have invested significant effort in recovering and replanting nearly forgotten indigenous varieties including Ròssola, Pignola, Brugnola, Negrera, and Ròssolino Rosa, the grapes behind the Liom. The winery is certified organic by Valoritalia, one of very few fully natural producers in Valtellina.

In the cellar, the approach is minimal but considered. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, in vessels that vary by wine: stainless steel and concrete for some cuvées, amphorae for the Liom. Wines are aged in large neutral oak barrels or, in the case of Liom, in the same amphorae used for fermentation. Nothing is fined or filtered. Sulfur additions, when used at all, are kept as low as possible. The labels feature reproductions of Neolithic cave paintings found in the surrounding mountains, tying each wine to the deep human history of this Alpine territory.

Wine region

Lombardia, Italy

Valtellina is a high-altitude wine zone in the province of Sondrio in Lombardy, running east to west along the Adda River valley just south of the Swiss border. The vineyards occupy the south-facing slopes on the valley's left bank, and the terrain here is among the most demanding in Italian viticulture. Slopes exceeding 30 degrees are common, and in many parcels the gradient pushes well beyond 40 degrees, making mechanization impossible and requiring all vineyard work to be carried out entirely by hand. The ancient dry-stone terraces, built over centuries, support the soil on these gradients and are a defining feature of the landscape.

The geology of Valtellina is primarily granitic, with soils formed from the breakdown of gneiss, granite, and quartz. These coarse-grained, well-drained substrates are low in nutrients and force vines to root deeply, producing wines with a characteristic dusty, stony minerality that distinguishes Valtellina reds from Nebbiolo grown in the richer soils of Piemonte. The altitude, which ranges from around 300 to over 900 metres above sea level across the valley, creates a cool growing season with significant day-to-night temperature variation, preserving acidity and aromatic freshness in the grapes.

The Valgella subzone, where Barbacàn's San Giacomo di Teglio estate is located, is the westernmost and highest of Valtellina Superiore's five named subzones. The area's soils have a particularly high silica content and the subzone's cooler temperatures produce wines of notable elegance and finesse. The Liom vineyard, the source of the wine bearing its name, sits between 700 and 800 metres, at the upper limit of viable viticulture in the valley.
