The Region: Russian River Valley

The Russian River Valley is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) located in Sonoma County, California. This appellation extends along the Russian River basin, encompassing the areas around the cities of Sebastopol, Santa Rosa, Forestville, and Healdsburg.

Viticulture in this AVA has a relatively long history: it was initiated during the 19th century by immigrant communities, which relocated to California mostly from Southern Europe – the majority were of Italian descent. It was only with the turn of the 20th century that viticulture and winemaking became commercial phenomena, with almost 200 wineries operating in the area.

After the dark ages of Prohibition, with its “Jackass brandy” and illegal wine production, we have seen a resurgence of winemaking starting from the early 1970s. It was Foppiano Vineyards in 1973 to label a wine Russian River for the very first time. The Russian River Valley was recognized as its own AVA in 1983.

The Terroir of Russian River Valley

The soils of Russian River Valley were shaped by two main factors: first, millions of years of tectonic activity between the North American and Pacific tectonic plates, second, relentless volcanic activity.

As a result, we have essentially three types of soils:

1) The "Goldridge soil", sandstone of loam, created by volcanic ash compacted over layers of bedrock. It is on Goldrige soil where the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards have been planted.

2) The "Sebastopol soil", predominantly clay from the Sonoma Mountains, with great water drainage and ideal for growing Pinot Noir.

3) Alluvial soil, mostly along the Russian River basin.

Generally speaking, the Russian River Valley is a cool climate area, a characteristic due mainly to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, which a mere 10 miles away. Hence the love affair with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, grape varietals thriving in cool viticultural areas – such as for example Burgundy in France.

The Pacific Ocean is also responsible for the signature coastal morning fog, which embraces the vineyards slowing down the ripening process and contributing to the grapes finesse. The Russian River’s influence on the region’s climate has to do more with irrigation during the summer than with its mitigating effect.

Shipping Policy

Stress-Free Shipping

At Primal Wine, we like to be transparent about everything we do. When it comes to buying products online, shipping is the most important aspect, and that’s why we take great care in shipping and handling your order using only 100% recycled packaging material.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package gets returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee to be determined based on shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive, we are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to re-route a package after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a $25 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancelling fee – the amount depends on how big the order is. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat damage

WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR HEAT-RELATED ISSUES. WE OFFER ICE-PACKS AS ONE OF OUR SHIPPING OPTIONS. PLEASE SELECT THAT OPTION SHOULD YOU THINK THAT THERE COULD BE HEAT-RELATED ISSUES.
