The Wine: Raft Wines Counoise Light Red 2022
Counoise, a dark and thin-skinned grape from Southern Rhone, France, is typically used in Châteauneuf-du-Pape blends for its peppery flavor and vibrant acidity. In California, it's less common but makes for an enjoyable summer red. Best served slightly chilled, it pairs well with charcuterie.
The Producer: Raft Wines
Founded in 2016 by Jennifer Reichardt, Raft Wines was inspired by the joy of connecting with the land and the pleasure of sharing food and wine. Jennifer's sense of community at the dining table has been her guiding light, much like a "raft" that supports her in her journey.
Jennifer's roots trace back to a long family history in California's food industry, dating from 1901, notably in duck farming for Bay Area restaurants. The name "Raft" symbolizes a close-knit group, akin to a flock of ducks, emphasizing wines crafted to complement meals, especially pairing well with Liberty Duck.
Her winemaking journey began in the spring of 2011, culminating in her first harvest in Sonoma County that fall. Since then, she has gained diverse experience through six additional harvests, spanning locations from the Sonoma Coast to Chile and Australia. With her eighth harvest, she realized the dream of creating her wine to share with loved ones. As of 2023, Raft Wines is celebrating its seventh vintage and eagerly anticipates the upcoming harvest season.
