Description

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge "Lulu & Lucien" 2020 originates from the Bandol appellation in Provence, France. The vineyards are characterized by clay and limestone soils, providing optimal conditions for cultivating Mourvèdre, the dominant grape in this blend. The 2020 vintage comprises 75% Mourvèdre, 14% Grenache, 9% Cinsault, and 2% Carignan. The vines average over 40 years of age, contributing to the wine's complexity. Following traditional winemaking practices, the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts. The wine undergoes aging in large oak foudres (25 to 50 hectoliters) for 18 to 20 months, allowing for the integration of flavors and the development of its distinctive character. This cuvée was renamed "Lulu & Lucien" in 2020 to honor the estate's founders, Lucie "Lulu" and Lucien Peyraud.

Why we like it

The wine exhibits a deep ruby hue. The nose offers aromas of dark fruit, Provençal herbs, and subtle earthy undertones. On the palate, it is full-bodied with flavors of blackberries, plums, and hints of spice, leading to a long, structured finish.

Producer profile

Domaine Tempier

Domaine Tempier, established in 1834, is a family-owned estate located in the Bandol appellation of Provence, France. The estate gained prominence under the stewardship of Lucien and Lucie "Lulu" Peyraud, who began managing the property in 1940. Lucien's dedication to the Mourvèdre grape was instrumental in defining the character of Bandol wines, earning him the title of the "spiritual father of Bandol wine."

The estate spans approximately 60 hectares, with vineyards planted on varied terroirs, including clay and limestone soils. This diversity contributes to the complexity of their wines. Domaine Tempier is renowned for its red wines, particularly those dominated by Mourvèdre, celebrated for their aging potential and depth of flavor. They also produce esteemed rosé and white wines, each reflecting the unique characteristics of their terroir.

Adhering to traditional winemaking practices, the estate employs organic farming methods and minimal intervention in the cellar. Grapes are hand-harvested, and fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts. Aging occurs in large oak foudres, allowing the wines to develop complexity while preserving their authentic expression. Domaine Tempier's commitment to quality and tradition has solidified its reputation as a benchmark producer in Bandol. Its wines are highly sought after by enthusiasts worldwide.

Wine region

Provence, France

The Provence wine region in southeastern France is celebrated for its rosé wines, constituting approximately 90% of its production. Provence stretches along the Mediterranean coast, from the Rhône River in the west to the Côte d'Azur in the east. The region's wine history dates back over 2,600 years, making it the oldest wine-producing area in France.

1. Côtes de Provence: The largest and most prominent appellation, covering around 20,000 hectares. It produces mainly rosé wines from Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault, with some red and white wines.

2. Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence: The second-largest appellation, influenced by the Mistral winds. Known for its rosés, it also produces reds and whites from grapes like Grenache, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

3. Coteaux Varois en Provence: Located in the heart of Provence, this region has cooler, higher-altitude vineyards that produce wines with good acidity and complex flavors. The primary grapes are Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault.

4. Bandol: Famous for its robust reds primarily made from Mourvèdre, Bandol also produces exceptional rosé and white wines. The vineyards here benefit from the area's well-drained limestone soils and warm climate.

5. Cassis: Known for its white wines from Marsanne and Clairette, this coastal region offers elegant citrus and herbal notes.

Provence's diverse terroir, ranging from coastal areas to inland hills, contributes to the distinctiveness of its wines. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, sunny days, cool nights, and varied soils, allows for a range of wine styles. The region is also known for its commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture, particularly in Les Baux de Provence.
