Producer profile

Patrick Sullivan

Patrick Sullivan is an innovative and respected winemaker from Gippsland, Australia. Raised in rural Victoria, his early exposure to agriculture ignited a passion for viticulture. After exploring Europe and studying botany and actuarial science, Patrick shifted his focus to winemaking. He initially worked with notable winemakers such as William Downie and Anna Martens, which helped refine his approach to natural wine production.

In 2010, he launched Patrick Sullivan Wines, focusing on small-batch, biodynamic, and organic wines that express the unique terroirs of Gippsland and the Yarra Valley. His vineyards, such as the Tumblestone site in the Strzelecki Ranges, employ dry farming and biodynamic practices, aiming for minimal intervention in the winemaking process. His wines are known for purity and vibrancy, often crafted with wild yeast fermentations and low sulfur additions. Patrick’s philosophy revolves around sustainable agriculture, strongly focusing on soil health. A deep connection to the land drives his winemaking, and he aspires to leave his vineyards in better condition for future generations.

Wine region

Yarra Valley, Australia

The Yarra Valley is one of Australia's most renowned wine regions, located just east of Melbourne in Victoria. Known for its cool climate, the Yarra Valley is ideal for producing elegant and refined wines, particularly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which thrive in the region's temperate conditions. However, the region also excels in producing sparkling wines, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz, with various soil types ranging from volcanic to sandy loams.

The Yarra Valley's history dates back to the 1830s, making it one of Australia's oldest wine regions. Today, it is home to large, established wineries and smaller boutique producers championing organic and biodynamic practices. With its diverse microclimates, the region produces wines with vibrant acidity and distinctive varietal expression, often showcasing complex flavors and excellent aging potential. Tourism is also a significant aspect of the Yarra Valley, attracting visitors to its cellar doors, restaurants, and stunning landscapes. The region has earned a reputation as a premier destination for wine lovers, offering exceptional wines and a strong farm-to-table dining culture.
