Tasting notes

Muscat is almost never made this way — three weeks of skin contact strips the grape of its cloying sweetness and replaces it with saline tension, grip, and a citrus-driven edge that lasts. The granite soils at 500 meters give it a mineral spine you rarely find in Alsatian Muscat.

Kammasutra is a skin-contact Muscat from Eric Kamm's estate in Dambach-la-Ville, a fortified medieval village in the Bas-Rhin. The wine is made from a blend of Muscat blanc à petits grains and Muscat rose à petits grains, grown on granite soils at around 500 meters elevation. The vines are approximately 50 years old, farmed organically without herbicides, synthetic products, or chemical fertilizers.

The grapes are skin-macerated for roughly three weeks, which pulls tannin structure and grip from the skins while tempering Muscat's typically exuberant aromatic sweetness. Fermentation happens spontaneously with native yeasts in the estate's cellars, with no temperature control. The wine is aged in stainless steel and bottled without fining, filtration, or added sulfites.

The result is an orange-yellow wine with pronounced citrus and floral aromas — lychee, grapefruit, orange blossom — undercut by a firm, saline acidity that comes from the decomposed granite soils of the Frankstein hillsides. The palate is broad and round with very low residual sugar (0–1 g/l), and the tannin from extended skin contact gives it surprising structure for a Muscat.

Production is small. This is one of Kamm's natural wine cuvées, a line that now accounts for the majority of the domaine's sales.

Works well as an aperitif or alongside dishes with enough richness to meet its tannin — foie gras, soft-ripened cheeses, or spiced dishes where the wine's citrus and floral notes provide contrast. Also good with lean fish in herbal or citrus preparations, and Southeast Asian cuisine where lychee and grapefruit notes play off aromatic sauces.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Eric Kamm

Domaine Jean-Louis et Eric Kamm was founded in 1905 in Dambach-la-Ville. Eric Kamm is the third generation of the family to work the estate, taking over from his father Jean-Louis in 2005. Under Jean-Louis, the domaine practiced lutte raisonnée; Eric began the conversion to organic farming in 2010 and obtained certification shortly after.

The estate covers 6.5 hectares of vines planted around Dambach-la-Ville at approximately 500 meters elevation on decomposed granite soils. Varieties include Pinot Gris, Riesling, Auxerrois, Muscat, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Noir. The farming is done without herbicides, synthetic products, or chemical fertilizers. Eric designs his own labels, which are deliberately playful and provocative.

Fermentations happen in the estate's ancestral cellar using only native yeasts present on the grape skins, with no temperature control. The domaine does not fine or filter its wines and adds no sulfur at any stage of vinification. Natural wines now represent approximately 70% of the domaine's sales. Eric describes his role as being 'as non-interventionist as possible between the vine and the grape.'

Wine region

Alsace, France

Alsace runs north to south along the eastern slopes of the Vosges mountains in northeastern France, bordered by the Rhine to the east. The Vosges act as a rain shadow, making Alsace one of the driest wine regions in France. Vineyards are planted in a narrow band at altitudes of roughly 175 to 420 meters on the lower eastern Vosges slopes, with Dambach-la-Ville's parcels reaching around 500 meters — high even by Alsatian standards.

Dambach-la-Ville sits in the Bas-Rhin and is home to the Frankstein Grand Cru, one of 51 recognized grands crus in Alsace. The defining feature of Frankstein is its geology: both soil and subsoil are granite throughout, a rare uniformity in Alsace. The decomposed granite breaks into a coarse sand called arène granitique, which drains freely, stresses the vine, and transmits a fine saline minerality to the wines. The appellation Alsace AOP covers all varieties grown outside grand cru declinations, including the Muscat used in Kammasutra.
