Tasting notes

The blanc de noir construction here is genuinely unusual: Touriga Nacional pressed off its skins, then macerated on the white grape skins of Arinto, Fernão Pires, and Sauvignon Blanc for three months in clay amphorae. The result is citrusy and fresh with peach and red apple, then a nutty, grippy finish from the extended skin contact — tightly wound Atlantic acidity keeps it lively to the end.

Curtimenta Longa is an orange wine from Rodrigo Filipe's Humus label at Quinta do Paço in Alvorninha, within the Óbidos DOC of the Lisboa wine region. The wine is built on a distinctive winemaking idea: Touriga Nacional, typically a red grape, is pressed as a blanc de noir and combined with the skins of Fernão Pires, Arinto, and Sauvignon Blanc, which ferment together in clay amphorae for approximately three months. That extended skin contact gives the wine its amber color and textural grip.

After the maceration period, the wine is transferred to used 225-liter chestnut barrels for nine months of aging. Nothing is added — no fining agents, no filtration, no sulfites. Fermentation is spontaneous throughout, driven entirely by native yeasts from the estate's organically farmed vineyards. The grapes are harvested by hand.

The vineyards at Quinta do Paço sit at around 150 meters above sea level on calcareous clay-limestone soils, roughly 20 kilometers from the Atlantic. The cool, humid maritime climate extends the ripening season and keeps natural acidity high. The estate has held organic certification since 2007. Rodrigo, a former civil engineer and self-taught winemaker, first produced Humus wines in 2009, taking over vines his father planted on the property in the 1990s.

The tannic grip and bright acidity make this a natural match for oily fish — grilled sardines, mackerel, or bacalhau prepared simply with olive oil. It also works well with semi-hard cheeses, charcuterie, and dishes with a bit of fat to soften the wine's grip. Serve slightly chilled at around 55°F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Encosta da Quinta

Encosta da Quinta is the family estate of Rodrigo Filipe, located in the village of Alvorninha near Caldas da Rainha in the Óbidos area. The property, known as Quinta do Paço, totals about 20 hectares, with approximately 9 to 10 hectares planted to vines. The quinta was originally purchased by Rodrigo's grandfather and the first vines were planted by his father in the 1990s. Rodrigo began making wine full-time around 2000, having previously worked as a civil engineer. He is self-taught, with no formal oenology training.

The estate has been certified organic since 2007. In the vineyard, Rodrigo uses natural compost and applies only small quantities of copper and sulfur when required. Red varieties planted include Castelão, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, and Syrah; whites include Fernão Pires, Arinto, Vital, and a small amount of Sauvignon Blanc. The 2009 vintage marked the first release under the Humus label.

In the cellar, all Humus wines undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and are bottled without fining, filtration, or added sulfites. The Curtimenta style uses clay amphorae for the skin-contact maceration phase, followed by aging in used chestnut and oak barrels. Rodrigo's approach is intuitive rather than formulaic — the Curtimenta itself was born out of a creative solution to having more red grapes than white in the vineyard.

Wine region

Lisboa, Portugal

Óbidos DOC sits within the wider Lisboa wine region on Portugal's Atlantic coast, roughly one hour north of Lisbon. The vineyards lie at around 150 to 200 meters above sea level, positioned between the Atlantic Ocean and the Serra dos Candeeiros range. A gap in the hills allows cold, wet westerlies off the Atlantic to reach the vineyards year-round, creating a cool, high-humidity environment that extends the ripening season and preserves natural acidity in the grapes. The main soil formations are calcareous limestone with clay. The Óbidos DOC was promoted from IPR status in 2006.

The Lisboa wine region (formerly labeled Estremadura) is one of Portugal's largest in terms of vineyard area and encompasses nine sub-regional DOCs, including Óbidos, Alenquer, Bucelas, Colares, and Torres Vedras. The dominant white varieties in Óbidos are Arinto and Fernão Pires, while reds are led by Castelão and Touriga Nacional. The cool maritime conditions here favor high-acid wines and produce some of Portugal's better sparkling wines. Humus wines are labeled as Vinho Regional Lisboa, a broader designation that allows for greater flexibility than the Óbidos DOC rules.
