Tasting notes

At 11% ABV with ten days of skin contact, Birbo manages to be genuinely textured without any weight — citrus zest, a whisper of pineapple, and a saline finish that makes it impossible to stop at one glass. It is the kind of orange wine that wins over people who think they do not like orange wine.

Birbo (Venetian dialect for a lovingly naughty child) is Marco Buratti's skin-contact white from the volcanic hills of Colli Euganei, near the village of Teolo in the province of Padua. The 2019 is a blend of Malvasia and Tocai Italico sourced from old vines farmed without chemicals on mineral-rich volcanic soils within the Colli Euganei National Park.

The grapes are fermented and aged in concrete vats with ten days of skin contact. Nothing is added at any point: no sulfites, no fining agents, no filtration. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts. The result is a cloudy, amber-gold wine with a gentle grip from the maceration and a slight natural spritz on the palate.

At 11% ABV, Birbo is one of the lightest-alcohol orange wines you will find from Italy. The skin contact delivers texture and a faint tannic edge without turning the wine heavy or extractive. It reads as fruit-forward and saline, with citrus zest, dried herb, and a hint of pineapple on the finish.

Production is extremely limited. Farnea makes between 8,000 and 10,000 bottles per year across all wines. Birbo is bottled without capsule, consistent with Marco's stated commitment to reducing waste.

Birbo works well as an aperitivo alongside cured meats, olives, and soft cheeses. Its light tannin and bright acidity also make it a natural match for shellfish, lean white fish, and pasta with light vegetable sauces. Serve well chilled.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Farnea

Marco Buratti's Azienda Agricola Farnea is located in Villa di Teolo, a small village within the Colli Euganei National Park in the province of Padua. Before returning to his native hills, Buratti worked variously as a restaurant manager in Padua and as a chef in New Zealand. He cleared a forested area to plant vines in 2003, and his first commercial vintage was 2007. The estate covers approximately two hectares of vines and three hectares of woodland.

The vineyards are farmed by hand with biodynamic attention, without synthetic chemical treatments. Only minimal applications of sulfur and copper are used when necessary in the vineyard. The volcanic soils of the Colli Euganei National Park have attracted vine growers since the eighteenth century. Buratti also keeps pigs, chickens, and sheep at a nearby parcel in Bettone, where he acquired an additional hectare of vines.

Winemaking takes place in a small cellar at the edge of Buratti's house, equipped with concrete and fiberglass vats and old barrels. All fermentations are spontaneous with native yeasts. Nothing is added at any stage: no fining agents, no filtration, and no added sulfites. Total annual production across all wines is between 8,000 and 10,000 bottles. Buratti bottles without capsules as a personal statement against unnecessary waste.

Wine region

Veneto, Italy

Veneto is Italy's leading wine-producing region by volume, spanning from the Alpine foothills in the north to the Adriatic coast in the east. Its geography is unusually varied: Lake Garda borders the northwest, Valpolicella and Soave sit in the center-west, and the Colli Euganei (Euganean Hills) rise from the flat Po Valley plain southwest of Padua. The region produces major DOC and DOCG wines including Amarone della Valpolicella, Soave, Valpolicella, and Prosecco, with 35,400 hectares under DOC designation out of roughly 90,000 total planted hectares.

Colli Euganei is one of the few volcanic wine sub-regions in Italy. The hills are ancient, now-extinct volcanoes that push through the otherwise flat Padovan plain, roughly 60 kilometers southwest of Venice. Soils are formed from the disintegration of volcanic rock, mineral-rich and well-draining, with pockets of limestone and clay. The climate is broadly Mediterranean, with warm dry summers and rainfall concentrated in the winter months. Key grapes grown here include Malvasia, Tocai (Friulano), Moscato Giallo, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, along with rarer indigenous varieties such as Marzemina and Pinella. The Colli Euganei DOC covers municipalities across the province of Padua, including Teolo, Baone, Vo, and Arqua Petrarca.
