Tasting notes

Warm amber-gold with a hazy, golden depth. The nose is aromatic and layered, with dried apricot, white flowers, toasted hazelnut, citrus zest, and a chalk mineral note. On the palate, the wine is dry and structured, with fine tannins from skin contact, vibrant acidity, and a long saline finish.

  • Style: Dry, medium-bodied skin-contact white; the four-day maceration gives the wine amber color and phenolic grip without making it heavy; the combination of high altitude, limestone soils, and old vines produces a structured, mineral profile that reads more as textured white than as a deeply oxidative orange wine
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Fiano; old vines 30 to over 90 years old; Lapio and Candida, Avellino province, Irpinia, Campania; clay-limestone and marl soils at 450–500 metres with a volcanic cap; organically farmed; hand-harvested at low yields
  • Winemaking: Four-day skin maceration after harvest; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts on fine lees for approximately 3 months; 12 months aging in old chestnut and acacia barrels; no temperature control; bottled unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfites
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 55–59°F; pour freely without full decanting, though 15 to 20 minutes in a generous glass will help the aromatics open; best enjoyed slowly as it evolves in the glass
  • Pairing: Pasta con le sarde (Sicilian pasta with sardines and wild fennel)

Cantina Giardino Fiano Gaia Orange 2021 is a dry skin-contact white wine made from 100% Fiano by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola at Cantina Giardino in Irpinia, Campania. Following a four-day skin maceration with spontaneous fermentation, Cantina Giardino Fiano Gaia Orange 2021 ages for 12 months in old chestnut and acacia barrels. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites. Campania IGP.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Giardino

Cantina Giardino was established in Ariano Irpino by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola, growing out of informal winemaking experiments among a group of friends in the late 1990s at the cellar of a man they knew as Professor Giardino, whose name the winery took. The commercial project launched formally in 2003, built around a single guiding principle: identify and rescue the old-vine parcels of Irpinia that local farmers could no longer afford to maintain. Industrial agriculture had pressed many growers to uproot indigenous varieties or abandon vineyards altogether, and Antonio and Daniela worked to reverse that trajectory by farming and vinifying those sites themselves.

Antonio studied food technology before specializing in viticulture and oenology in Piedmont. Daniela, trained as an architect, contributes to the project in practical and artistic dimensions, including crafting terracotta amphorae by hand from soil taken directly from the vineyards. Today Cantina Giardino works approximately seven hectares across sixteen parcels in the province of Avellino, with vines of Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, and Coda di Volpe, some exceeding 100 years old. All farming is organic, all work in the vineyard is by hand, and vines are trained in the traditional alberello style where possible.

In the cellar, fermentations are spontaneous and proceed without temperature control, sometimes continuing for months. Vessels include terracotta and sandstone amphorae, and casks of local chestnut, acacia, cherry, and mulberry. No fining, no filtration, and in most cases no added sulfites. Every vintage's labels are hand-designed by a different local artist.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Irpinia sits in the mountainous interior of Campania, within the province of Avellino, roughly midway between Naples and the Adriatic coast. The terrain is rugged and hilly, with vineyards planted at elevations of 400 to 600 metres on a complex mosaic of volcanic, limestone, clay, and marl soils. The altitude brings cooler temperatures and significant diurnal variation through the growing season, allowing white grapes like Fiano to ripen slowly and retain both aromatic intensity and structural acidity.

The areas of Lapio and Candida, from which Cantina Giardino sources the Fiano for Gaia, are historic sites within the Fiano di Avellino DOCG zone. This DOCG is one of Italy's most respected white wine appellations and is considered one of the greatest white wines of the south. The soils here are calcareous marls and limestone with a thin volcanic cap, a combination that shapes Fiano's naturally mineral, nutty, and floral character. The vines for the Gaia parcel range from 30 to over 90 years old, their root systems reaching deep into this mineral-rich subsoil.

Irpinia holds three DOCGs: Taurasi for Aglianico, Fiano di Avellino, and Greco di Tufo. These appellations together represent the highest formal recognition of Irpinia's white and red wine traditions. Beyond the named appellations, the province continues to harbor old, organically farmed parcels of indigenous varieties that producers like Cantina Giardino have made it their mission to preserve. The region is increasingly recognized internationally as one of the most distinctive and place-specific wine territories in southern Italy.
