Tasting notes

Intense golden-amber color with luminous depth. The nose bursts with citrus peel, verbena, aromatic herbs, and iodine with rocky mineral undertones. The palate is fresh yet structured, showing pulpy fruit, firm tannins, and a long, salty finish driven by volcanic minerality.

Cantina Giardino Fra Falanghina is a skin-contact white wine from Campania, produced by the acclaimed natural wine pioneers Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola. Sourced from 30-year-old vines planted at 400 meters elevation in Benevento province, Cantina Giardino Fra Falanghina expresses the volcanic soils derived from Mount Taburno. The grapes undergo four days of skin maceration before pressing, followed by approximately one year of aging in large chestnut casks. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with minimal sulfites, this orange wine delivers intense minerality and fine-grained texture at around 12% alcohol.

Spaghetti alle vongole, grilled octopus, burrata, fried calamari, aged pecorino, vegetable tempura, mushroom risotto, roast chicken

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Giardino

Cantina Giardino was founded in 2003 by a group of six friends united by passion for wine and commitment to reviving Campania's viticultural heritage. The project is led by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola, who began experimental natural winemaking in 1998—five years before officially establishing the winery. Their mission: produce wines through spontaneous fermentation, without filtering, without clarifying, and without sulfites when possible.

The estate sources grapes from 16 distinct parcels across Irpinia, totaling approximately six hectares. Recently, Antonio and Daniela purchased 2.5 hectares of their own vineyards, primarily old vines. From the beginning, Cantina Giardino's goal has been rescuing ancient vineyards—vines 50 years or older—from local farmers (contadini) who might otherwise abandon or uproot them. This preservation work maintains genetic diversity and captures the character of mature, low-yielding plants.

In the cellar, Cantina Giardino takes a flexible, intuitive approach. Fermentation proceeds naturally without temperature control and may continue for months. Aging vessels vary by wine and vintage: homemade clay amphorae (crafted by Daniela using soil from their vineyards), stainless steel, oak barrels, chestnut casks, and demi-muits all play roles. Sulfur is added only when absolutely necessary.

The Fra Falanghina represents a relatively recent addition to the portfolio—first produced in 2019 after Antonio and Daniela finally located suitable old-vine Falanghina parcels near Benevento. According to the winemakers, Falanghina offers more immediate drinkability than Coda di Volpe, Fiano, or Greco, while still rewarding attention with textural complexity.

Each vintage features labels designed by local artists, creating colorful, distinctive artwork that reflects the wines' individuality.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Campania occupies the southwestern coast of Italy, stretching from the Tyrrhenian Sea inland to the Apennine Mountains. This ancient wine region traces its viticultural heritage to Greek colonists who planted vines here over 2,500 years ago. The Romans further developed Campanian viticulture, with Falernian wine—possibly made from an ancestor of modern Falanghina—achieving legendary status at imperial banquets.

The region's diverse terroir combines volcanic soils, limestone hills, and Mediterranean climate. Mount Vesuvius dominates the coastal landscape, while further inland, volcanic formations like Mount Taburno in Benevento province contribute mineral-rich deposits to vineyard soils. These porous, well-drained volcanic terrains produce wines of pronounced minerality and aromatic intensity.

Irpinia, the mountainous interior zone around Avellino, represents Campania's viticultural heartland. Here, vineyards often reach 400–600 meters elevation, experiencing significant temperature variation between day and night. This continental-influenced climate—unusual for southern Italy—prolongs the growing season, allowing grapes to develop complexity while retaining acidity.

Campania cultivates numerous indigenous varieties found nowhere else. Falanghina, whose name references the wooden poles (phalanges) traditionally used to support vines, produces aromatic whites with citrus and floral character. Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino—both DOCG-designated—create age-worthy whites with mineral depth. For reds, Aglianico dominates, particularly in the Taurasi DOCG, producing structured, tannic wines often compared to Barolo or Nebbiolo.

The natural wine movement has flourished in Campania, with producers like Cantina Giardino championing old vines and minimal-intervention winemaking. These artisanal estates work to preserve traditional vineyards that might otherwise be abandoned.
