Tasting notes

Sicilian Syrah at 12% ABV is a rare thing — the biodynamic farming at Contrada Pergola and spontaneous fermentation in steel keep the wine lively and unadorned, with blood orange and fresh soil cutting through the plum fruit. It drinks more like a warm-climate Gamay than a brooding Rhone Syrah.

Gaudioso's Syrah comes from Contrada Pergola, a 3-hectare plot in Partanna, southwest Sicily, in the province of Trapani. The vines were planted in 1998, trained to Guyot, and grow in sandy clay soils at 250 meters elevation. The wine is classified IGP Terre Siciliane.

Farming is fully biodynamic. The Gaudioso family abolished synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides, managing the land with green manure, compost, and biodynamic preparations. Copper and sulfur are the only treatments used against plant disease. Sheep are also raised on the property alongside vineyards and olive groves.

Fermentation is spontaneous in stainless steel with no temperature control and no added yeasts. The wine ages in stainless steel until April following the harvest, then is bottled with minimal sulfites and no fining. Annual production is approximately 1,300 bottles.

In the glass, it shows a dense purple-red color. Expect fresh red fruit — cherries, red mulberries, plum — alongside notes of blood orange, dried herbs, and soil. The low alcohol (12%) keeps it light on its feet despite the warm Sicilian growing conditions.

A natural match for brick-oven pizza, lamb ragu, and braised pork. The wine's fresh acidity and moderate tannin also work well alongside aged Sicilian cheeses like Pecorino Siciliano. Try it slightly chilled at 58-60F to bring out the red fruit character.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Gaudioso

Azienda Agricola Gaudioso is a family-run farm in Partanna, a small commune in southwest Sicily in the province of Trapani. The estate grows grapes and olives and also raises sheep. Vineyards and olive groves are spread across the hilly areas of Partanna and Salaparuta. The Gaudioso family first presented a clean biodynamic harvest in 2018, following a multi-year conversion process guided by Michele Lorenzetti, a biologist and oenologist who mentored them through the transition to biodynamics.

The farm operates with full biodynamic principles: no synthetic fertilizers, no chemical pesticides, and no herbicides. The land is managed using green manure, compost, and biodynamic preparations. Copper and sulfur are the only treatments applied when plant disease requires intervention. All harvests are done by hand.

In the cellar, winemaking is minimal. Fermentation is spontaneous using only native yeasts, carried out in stainless steel tanks without temperature control. Wines age in stainless steel until April after the harvest. No fining agents are used, and sulfites are kept minimal at bottling. The Syrah comes from Contrada Pergola, a 3-hectare plot with sandy clay soils at 250 meters elevation, with vines planted in 1998 trained to Guyot.

Wine region

Sicily, Italy

Partanna sits in the province of Trapani in southwest Sicily, one of the island's most productive wine zones. The area has a classic Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers, mild winters, and strong island winds that reduce disease pressure and support organic and biodynamic farming. Vineyards in this part of Trapani typically sit at modest elevations with sandy clay soils. The Terre Siciliane IGP, created in 2011, covers the entire island and gives producers the flexibility to work with international varieties like Syrah alongside indigenous grapes.

Sicily is Italy's largest wine region, with the provinces of Agrigento, Palermo, and Trapani accounting for the majority of production. The island holds 23 DOCs, one DOCG (Cerasuolo di Vittoria), the Sicilia DOC, and the island-wide Terre Siciliane IGP. The western Trapani zone is dominated by local whites — Catarratto, Grillo, Grecanico — but the hot climate and well-drained soils also suit red varieties. The Gaudioso estate in Partanna works within this IGP framework, giving them freedom to produce natural, minimally interventionist wines without the constraints of a stricter DOC.
