Tasting notes

This is Cannonau at its most direct: ripe amarena cherry and raspberry on the nose, with wild herbs and a mineral edge that reminds you exactly where it comes from. It comes from one of the few estates in Sardinia committed to biodynamic farming since the early 2000s, using only the ancient Retagliadu Nieddu clone, no oak, and zero additives beyond minimal sulfites.

Renosu is Tenute Dettori's entry-level red, sourced from the estate's Cannonau vines in the Romangia del Logudoro zone of northwestern Sardinia, near the town of Sennori. The name Renosu means "sandy" in Sardinian, referring to the sandy, limestone-rich soils of the Romangia valley floor where these vines grow at around 250-300 meters elevation, overlooking the Gulf of Asinara. The grape is the Retagliadu Nieddu, the ancient local clone of Cannonau specific to Romangia, grown in bush-trained (alberello) vines.

All vineyard work is done by hand without synthetic chemicals, following biodynamic practices the estate has used since at least 2003. Grapes are hand-harvested, sorted on a table, de-stemmed, and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in open concrete vats. Maceration lasts between 2 and 10 days depending on the vintage. The wine then ages in small concrete tanks until bottling, with no oak contact, no fining, and no filtration. The Renosu label receives wine that Alessandro Dettori judges not quite at the level of the estate's single-cru Badde Nigolosu bottlings.

Low sulfites (around 42 mg/L total) are used in the Renosu line, making it one of the more approachable natural reds from the estate. The result is a juicy, medium-bodied red with mild tannins, low acidity, and an expressive nose of ripe red fruit, garrigue herbs, and a mineral undercurrent drawn from the calcareous soils. It is released without a vintage year, as the blend may draw from multiple harvests to maintain consistency of style.

Pairs naturally with grilled lamb chops, Sardinian sausages (salsiccia sarda), or a board of aged pecorino and cured meats. The soft tannins and ripe fruit also hold up well against pasta with wild boar ragu or braised pork ribs.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Tenute Dettori

The Dettori family has farmed land near Sennori, in northwestern Sardinia, for generations. Wine was sold in bulk in demijohns until 1981, when Paolo Dettori began bottling part of the production. The modern estate project was formally launched in 1996 under the name 'Vignaioli Artigiani del vino e della Terra in Badde Nigolosu.' Alessandro Dettori, who began working with his father around 1990, now leads the estate and has been one of Sardinia's most consistent advocates for terroir-driven, minimally interventionist winemaking. The estate has never pursued the DOC Cannonau di Sardegna designation, choosing instead the Romangia IGT to foreground the specific geography of Badde Nigolosu.

The estate's vineyards sit in the Badde Nigolosu cru within the Romangia del Logudoro zone, on a hillside plateau at 250-300 meters elevation facing the Gulf of Asinara, 4 kilometers from the sea. Vines are bush-trained (alberello) at a density of around 5,000 vines per hectare, planted exclusively to ancient indigenous clones: the Retagliadu Nieddu clone of Cannonau, Monica, Pascale, Vermentino, and Moscato. The oldest Cannonau vines date to 1883, planted on their own roots without American rootstock. The estate has farmed biodynamically since at least 2003 without synthetic chemicals. All vineyard work is done by hand.

In the cellar, grapes are hand-sorted on a table, de-stemmed but not pressed, and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in open concrete vats with macerations of 2 to 10 days depending on the year. The wine then rests in small concrete tanks until bottling, with no oak at any stage. There is no fining and no filtration; the wine clarifies naturally through gravity settling and cold winter cellar temperatures. No chemical analysis is performed on grapes prior to harvest. The Renosu line is bottled without a vintage designation and carries a small addition of sulfites (around 42 mg/L total), while the estate's top single-cru wines are bottled with no added sulfites.

Wine region

Sardegna, Italy

Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean, lying roughly 150 miles off the west coast of mainland Italy. Its wine identity is built around indigenous varieties: Cannonau, Monica, Vermentino, Carignano, and Moscato, among others. The island has one DOCG (Vermentino di Gallura, in the northeast) and a network of DOC and IGT appellations. The dominant red appellation is Cannonau di Sardegna DOC, which covers the entire island, though many of Sardinia's most serious producers prefer smaller, more terroir-specific IGT designations. The climate is hot and dry in summer, tempered on the northern and western coasts by the Maestrale, a strong northwesterly wind equivalent to the Mistral in Provence.

Romangia IGT covers a coastal strip in the Sassari province of northern Sardinia, specifically the area around the towns of Sorso and Sennori. The zone sits between Sassari and Castelsardo and is historically known as Logudoro, meaning 'golden place' in the Sardinian dialect. Soils are predominantly limestone and marl, with sandy components in the valley floor. The Romangia is the historic home of the Retagliadu Nieddu, the ancient local Cannonau clone, as well as Vermentino and Moscato di Sorso-Sennori. Tenute Dettori deliberately uses the Romangia IGT designation rather than the broader Cannonau di Sardegna DOC, prioritizing terroir identity over varietal branding.
