Tasting notes

This is one of the most distinctive easy-drinking reds on the island: Corsican Grenache at 250 meters elevation on schist soils gives you wild strawberry and black raspberry with a savory maquis-herb edge and a genuine salinity on the finish that you rarely find at this price point. The acidity is electric and the tannins stay out of the way, making it as versatile at the table as it is straight from the bottle.

  • Serving: Serve at 58-62F; light chill brings out the acidity and freshness; no decant needed
  • Pairing: Herb-roasted chicken, grilled fish, Corsican charcuterie, aged sheep's milk cheese, Mediterranean vegetables
  • Similar To: For fans of Beaujolais cru and light-touch Grenache who want something distinctly Mediterranean and saline

La Boutanche is a collaboration between importer Selection Massale and Thomas Santamaria of Domaine Santamaria in Patrimonio, Corsica. The wine is bottled as Vin de France and is built around roughly 95% fully destemmed Grenache with a small addition of Niellucciu for structure and lift. Fruit comes from old bush-trained vines sitting at around 250 meters elevation on decomposed schist with pockets of limestone and clay, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea on the Ile-Rousse hillsides.

Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts in stainless steel, followed by a brief tank elevage. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with only a minimal addition of sulfur. At 14% ABV it is fuller than its glou-glou reputation might suggest, but the structure is all about acidity and freshness rather than weight or tannin.

In the glass it shows vivid ruby with violet highlights. The nose leads with wild strawberry, black raspberry, cracked pepper, and the herbal, garrigue-tinged character of Corsican maquis. The palate is light-to-medium bodied with crunchy red fruit, pomegranate, and a subtle seaside salinity on the finish. Tannins are present but barely there.

Thomas Santamaria is the sixth generation of his family to farm in Patrimonio. The estate holds 30 hectares across the communes of Oletta, Olmeta-di-Tuda, and Saint-Florent. Organic certification has been in place since 2014, and Thomas supplements that with biodynamic practices including lunar-cycle scheduling of vineyard work, though the estate is not formally biodynamic certified.

The bright acidity and low tannin make this a strong match for charcuterie boards, herb-roasted chicken, and grilled fish — especially anything with a Mediterranean seasoning. It also holds up well alongside aged sheep's milk cheeses like Corsican brocciu sec or pecorino. Serve lightly chilled at around 58-60F to keep the fruit lively.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Thomas Santamaria

Domaine Santamaria is a family estate based in Oletta, in the heart of the Patrimonio appellation. Thomas Santamaria is the sixth generation to lead the property, working alongside his father Jean-Louis and his brother Matthis. The estate has grown over generations to cover 30 hectares of vines spread across the communes of Oletta, Olmeta-di-Tuda, and Saint-Florent, planted on a mix of schist and limestone soils.

Previous generations maintained traditional farming practices and avoided the herbicide and pesticide pressures that swept through Corsican viticulture in the 1970s. Thomas has built on that history with certified organic farming since 2014 and biodynamic practices including lunar-cycle scheduling of all vineyard work. The estate applies only three low-dose copper and sulfur treatments per year and does not hold formal biodynamic certification. A proximity to Lake Padula creates a microclimate on certain parcels that sustains soil moisture through summer without irrigation.

In the cellar, Thomas works with native yeast fermentations in stainless steel. All wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur addition at bottling. The estate produces two tiers: the Tranoi range, bottled as Vin de France, which includes La Boutanche, and the Patrimonio AOC wines. La Boutanche is made in collaboration with importer Selection Massale and uses fully destemmed Grenache as the base with a small percentage of Niellucciu blended in for acidity and lift.

Wine region

Corsica, France

Patrimonio sits at the northern tip of Corsica, just west of Bastia, on the western side of the Massif du Monte Stello and along the Gulf of Saint-Florent. Established in 1968, it was Corsica's first AOC and today covers roughly 400 to 420 hectares across seven communes including Oletta, Saint-Florent, Barbaggio, Farinole, and Patrimonio itself. The appellation is geologically distinct from most of Corsica: while the island's interior and west coast are dominated by granite, Patrimonio sits on chalk-rich clay and limestone, with schist soils found especially in the higher elevations toward the Cap Corse foothills. This mosaic of limestone, clay-schist, and pockets of granite gives the wines a mineral tension uncommon elsewhere on the island.

The climate is Mediterranean, with hot dry summers moderated by sea winds off the Ligurian Sea and the southwest-blowing Libecciu, which keeps ambient humidity low and the vines healthy. The appellation receives roughly 2,800 to 3,000 hours of sunlight annually, with rainfall concentrated in autumn and winter. Niellucciu (genetically related to Sangiovese) is the dominant red variety and must comprise at least 90% of AOC Patrimonio reds; Grenache and Sciaccarello are permitted as blending partners. Vermentinu (Vermentino) is the sole authorized white variety. Since 2022, Patrimonio became the first AOC in France to formally prohibit synthetic herbicides in its appellation rules, reflecting a long-established culture of low-intervention farming in the area.
