Tasting notes

Bianchetto hits that rare balance between aromatic expressiveness and restraint: orange zest, ripe apricot, and dried Mediterranean herbs with a mineral undercurrent from the volcanic tufo soils. The skin contact adds just enough texture to hold everything together without weighing the wine down. It is one of the most drinkable orange wines you can open on a weeknight.

Bianchetto is a field-blend orange wine from Le Coste di Gradoli, sourced from young vineyards on volcanic tufo soils in Montefiascone and Pitigliano, at roughly 600 meters elevation above Lake Bolsena in northern Lazio. The blend is anchored by Procanico (the local name for Trebbiano Toscano) with Malvasia di Candia, Moscato, and other indigenous varieties. Volcanic soils here are rich in iron and minerals, formed from the now-dormant Vulsini crater that became Lake Bolsena.

Grapes are harvested by hand and undergo approximately two weeks of skin maceration with indigenous yeast fermentation in open vats. After pressing, the wine ages for five months in fiberglass tanks on fine lees. Nothing is added at any stage: no sulfur dioxide, no fining agents, no filtration.

The result is a dry, medium-bodied skin-contact white with a pale amber hue, lifted aromatics from the Moscato, and a mineral edge driven by the volcanic terroir. The tannin from the skin contact is light and refreshing rather than grippy, keeping the wine lively and food-friendly.

Bottled at the estate in Gradoli, province of Viterbo. Sold as Vino Bianco with organic certification; farming follows biodynamic principles.

Pair with pasta dishes featuring olive oil, garlic, and herbs, or with grilled fish and seafood. The wine's savory mineral character works well with soft cheeses like fresh pecorino or burrata. Also a strong match for Middle Eastern mezze, roasted vegetables, and dishes with preserved lemon.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Le Coste

Le Coste di Gradoli was founded in February 2004 when Gianmarco Antonuzzi, a Lazio native, and Clémentine Bouveron, a French agricultural engineer trained in viticulture and oenology in Macon and Bordeaux, purchased three hectares of abandoned land in Gradoli known as 'Le Coste,' situated approximately 600 meters above Lake Bolsena. The couple had met in 2001 while Gianmarco was apprenticing with Bruno Schueller in Alsace. Before returning to Lazio, Gianmarco worked with Didier Barral in Languedoc, Dard et Ribo in the Rhone, Jean-Paul Thévenet in Beaujolais, and Philippe Pacalet in Burgundy.

The estate has grown to approximately 14 hectares, including vineyards, olive groves, chestnut trees, and oak forest managed as a polyculture system. Vineyard blocks span Gradoli, Montefiascone, and Pitigliano, all on volcanic soils rich in iron and minerals. Vines are planted at densities of up to 10,000 plants per hectare using massale selections and ungrafted vines. The estate holds organic certification and operates according to biodynamic principles, using biodynamic preparations and herbal teas rather than synthetic inputs. All vineyard work is done by hand. Vineyards are not ploughed, allowing grass and wild cover to grow freely.

Winemaking takes place in a 400-year-old cellar in the center of Gradoli village. The cellar is designed for gravity flow, eliminating pumps entirely. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Wines age in fiberglass tanks and barrels of oak, cherry, and walnut. Each vineyard plot and grape variety is vinified separately. No additives are used at any stage, including sulfur dioxide, fining agents, or filtration aids. Bottling is done without fining or filtration.

Wine region

Lazio, Italy

Northern Lazio, in the province of Viterbo, sits at the intersection of Lazio, Tuscany, and Umbria. The defining geographic feature is Lake Bolsena, a volcanic crater lake formed from the now-dormant Monte Volsinii complex. Vineyards slope down toward the lake at elevations ranging from roughly 300 to 600 meters, benefiting from a lake-moderated microclimate that tempers summer heat and extends the growing season. Soils throughout the area are volcanic in origin, rich in iron, minerals, and porous tufo, which drains well and concentrates flavor without over-ripening fruit.

The primary formal appellations in this zone are Aleatico di Gradoli DOC, a sweet red made from the indigenous Aleatico grape, and Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone DOC, a white wine based on Procanico (Trebbiano Toscano), Malvasia, and Rossetto. Many natural producers in Gradoli, including Le Coste, work outside these DOC frameworks and sell their wines as Vino Bianco or Lazio IGP, allowing full freedom in grape selection and winemaking methods. The Gradoli subregion northwest of the lake has drawn significant international attention since the mid-2000s as a source of serious natural wine from indigenous varieties including Procanico, Aleatico, Roscetto, Grechetto Rosso, and Malvasia.
