Tasting notes

Pale amber-gold with a faint natural haze. The nose is lifted and aromatic: passionfruit, guava, orange zest, and dried apricot, with a floral undercurrent. The palate is light and juicy, with tropical fruit, gentle phenolic texture from skin contact, and a clean, mineral-edged finish.

Ruth Lewandowski Anos NV is a dry orange co-ferment produced by Evan Lewandowski of Ruth Lewandowski Wines from 100% organically farmed fruit at Fox Hill Vineyard on the Talmage Bench in Mendocino County, California. The wine blends three Italian varieties — Montepulciano, Trebbiano, and Friulano — whose shared "-ano" ending inspired the wine's name. Each variety is vinified separately: Montepulciano undergoes whole-cluster fermentation and bladder pressing, Trebbiano is destemmed and macerated through fermentation, and Friulano is split between direct press and skin contact. Ruth Lewandowski Anos NV is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites.

Fritto misto, Thai green papaya salad, grilled halloumi, aged Gouda, smoked mackerel pâté, Vietnamese spring rolls, spiced lamb flatbread, soft-ripened cheese.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Ruth Lewandowski

Ruth Lewandowski Wines was founded in 2012 by Evan Lewandowski, a winemaker who initially based his operation in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he had relocated to attend the University of Utah. The name of the project is drawn from the Book of Ruth in the Old Testament, a text that Lewandowski sees as a reflection of the cycles of farming, fermentation, and renewal that underpin natural winemaking. While the name evokes a specific person, Ruth in this context is a philosophy as much as a character: the idea that new life follows from what has come before, mirrored in the behavior of native yeasts and bacteria during fermentation.

Lewandowski began sourcing fruit from Mendocino County, specifically from Fox Hill Vineyard, at a time when the property was still owned by Lowell Stone and managed in partnership with Sam Bilbro of Idlewild Wines. Their collaboration extended to a shared farming initiative, Wild Ruth Farming, which oversaw both Fox Hill and Lost Hills Ranch in the Yorkville Highlands AVA. Evan moved his winemaking operations entirely to California in 2018, relocating to Healdsburg and sharing a facility with Sam Bilbro, and has been based there since.

The winemaking philosophy at Ruth Lewandowski centers on minimal intervention at every stage: native yeast fermentation, no added sulfites, no fining, and no filtration. Vinification methods vary by variety and are chosen to draw out what each grape does naturally, rather than to impose a style. The Anos cuvée is one of the estate's most distinctive wines and captures this approach in full: three varieties from the same vineyard, each vinified differently, assembled into a blend that reflects neither one grape nor one method but the character of the site and the season.

Today Fox Hill Vineyard is owned by Broc Cellars, though Lewandowski continues to source fruit from the property, maintaining the long-running relationship with a site that has been central to his winemaking since the label's earliest vintages.

Wine region

California, United States

Mendocino County is located roughly 100 miles north of San Francisco along California's North Coast, covering a diverse landscape of coastal ridges, river valleys, and inland benchlands. It is one of California's most varied wine counties in terms of climate and geology, with AVAs ranging from the cool, fog-influenced Anderson Valley near the Pacific to the warmer, more continental interior valleys around Ukiah and Redwood Valley.

Fox Hill Vineyard, where the fruit for Ruth Lewandowski Anos NV is sourced, sits on the Talmage Bench southeast of Ukiah, between the towns of Hopland and Ukiah, just above the Russian River. The bench is an uplifted former riverbed, and the soils reflect that origin: predominantly well-drained sandstone and gravel with high concentrations of quartz and river rock, all of which warm quickly, shed excess moisture, and push vine roots deep into fractured rock below. The combination of stony soils and the heat of the inland valley produces intensely flavored fruit with natural acidity preserved by cool nights.

The climate at the Talmage Bench is broadly Mediterranean and continental, with hot, dry summers and cool evenings that moderate ripeness. The valley floor around Ukiah is warmer than the coastal AVAs but still benefits from the diurnal temperature swings that are characteristic of Mendocino's inland sites. This thermal variation is one reason Italian varieties, which typically prefer warm days and cool nights to develop both sugar and acidity, have thrived at Fox Hill since owner Lowell Stone began replanting the property in the late 1980s, replacing Chardonnay and Riesling with dozens of Italian varieties sourced from nurseries, friends, and imported cuttings.

Mendocino County has developed a reputation as one of California's most fertile grounds for organically farmed, Italian-variety wines, and Fox Hill sits at the center of that identity.
