Tasting notes

This is a white wine built for the long haul: saline minerality, flint, and peach at the core, with the phenolic grip to age a decade or more. The 2016 has had time in bottle to flesh out, showing yellow fruit weight balanced against lemony, mineral acidity without losing its nerve.

Ciro Picariello's Fiano di Avellino is sourced from two high-elevation estate vineyards within the DOCG: Summonte at 650 meters (2,100 feet) above sea level, where the Summonte vineyard dates back to 1992 with northeast exposure, and Montefredane at 500 meters (1,650 feet), planted in 2002 with southeast exposure. Both sites sit in soils of sandy clay marls and conglomerates of upper sandstones. Harvest takes place in late October, unusually late for a white wine, driven by the continental climate of Irpinia and the strong diurnal temperature swings that slow ripening and preserve acidity.

In the cellar, Picariello presses slowly using only the free-run fraction. Fermentation proceeds with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel at controlled temperature for approximately 60 days. The wine then ages on its fine lees in stainless steel for 10 to 12 months with frequent batonnage, followed by additional bottle aging before release. No fining, no filtration, and minimal sulfur additions throughout.

The 2016 shows the hallmarks of Picariello's style: white flowers, flint, and yellow stone fruit on the nose, with a palate shaped by bright, saline acidity and textural phenolic weight. With bottle age, Fiano from this producer develops beeswax and honeyed notes reminiscent of aged Loire Chenin Blanc, and the 2016 vintage is well into that secondary evolution.

Fiano di Avellino DOCG requires a minimum of 85% Fiano. Picariello's wine is 100% Fiano, estate-grown, and farmed organically across his 12 hectares in the Avellino province.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

2. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

Producer profile

Ciro Picariello

Ciro Picariello founded his winery in 1997 in the village of Summonte, in the Avellino province of Campania. He and his wife Rita bottled their first vintage under their own label in 2004. The estate farms 12 hectares of vineyards divided between Summonte at 650 meters above sea level and Montefredane at 500 meters, with soils composed of sandy clay marls and conglomerates of upper sandstones. Farming is organic across both sites.

Picariello's flagship bottling, the Fiano di Avellino DOCG, blends fruit from the two communes. Vines at Summonte date to 1992 with northeast exposure; Montefredane vines were planted in 2002 with southeast exposure, both trained to double Guyot at a density of approximately 3,000 vines per hectare. Harvest takes place by hand in late October. He also produces a single-vineyard Fiano called '906', named after a specific parcel on the official Avellino cadastral map, released only in colder vintages when acidity is sufficient.

In the cellar, Picariello ferments with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel at controlled temperature for approximately 60 days, using only the free-run press fraction. The Fiano di Avellino DOCG ages on fine lees in stainless steel for 10 to 12 months with frequent batonnage, then rests in bottle before release. Sulfur additions are minimal; the wines are neither fined nor filtered. The result is a textured, phenolic white that is consistently clean and age-worthy across vintages.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Fiano di Avellino DOCG sits in the Irpinia hills of the Avellino province in Campania, roughly an hour east of Naples. The DOCG spans 26 municipalities and approximately 430 hectares, with vineyards ranging from 300 to 650 meters above sea level. Unlike the Mediterranean coast, Irpinia has a continental climate: cold winters, warm summers with cool nights, and large diurnal temperature swings from July through September that preserve fixed acidity and extend the growing season. Harvest for Fiano in this zone typically falls in the second half of October, among the latest dates in Italy.

Soils across the DOCG vary by subzone and drive meaningful stylistic differences. The Summonte area features sandy clay marls and sandstone with volcanic influence, producing concentrated, fruit-forward wines with power. Montefredane's clay-dominant soils protect against drought and yield wines with strong fixed acidity and notable longevity. Lapio, considered Fiano's ancestral home, produces structured wines with high minerality and acidity. The DOCG requires a minimum of 85% Fiano, though most quality producers, including Picariello, use 100%. Along with Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino is regarded as one of the two finest white wine appellations in southern Italy.
