Tasting notes

Pale gold with green highlights and clear definition. The nose is complex and layered, with guava, white flowers, citrus zest, quince, clove, and a distinct note of gunflint. On the palate, dry and taut, with racy acidity, lemon pith, subtle honey, and a long, saline mineral finish.

BodyFruitTanninAcidity
  • Style: Dry to off-dry, medium-bodied white with racy acidity and a distinctly mineral, flinty character; Jasnières Chenin Blanc sits apart from Vouvray or Savennières in its leaner, more tensile profile; the silex-rich soils impart a gunpowder minerality that persists through the finish
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Chenin Blanc; 35–40-year-old vines on clay, limestone, and silex (flint) soils on south-facing slopes above the Loir River, Jasnières AOC, Sarthe; approximately 9 hectares across 66 individual parcels; sustainably farmed (lutte raisonnée); most northerly Chenin Blanc AOC in the Loire Valley
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; native yeast fermentation in stainless steel; no malolactic conversion; lees aging in stainless steel for added texture without oak influence; no filtration; minimal sulfur
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 50–54°F; no decanting needed for young vintages, though a brief opening in the glass benefits the aromatics; best approached with patience as the wine develops over time
  • Pairing: Rillettes de Tours (potted pork from the Touraine)
  • Similar to: Savennières from the Loire, Vouvray sec, Chablis Premier Cru

Produced by Pascal Janvier, the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel without malolactic conversion, preserving the appellation's signature acidity and flinty mineral character. Pascal Janvier Chenin Blanc Jasnières 2024 is lees-aged for added texture. Jasnières AOC.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Pascal Janvier

Pascal Janvier is a small grower and the most prominent producer working in the Jasnières AOC today. He and his wife, Dominique, farm nine hectares of vineyards distributed across 66 individual parcels in the Loir Valley, in the department of the Sarthe. Pascal's background is unusual: he trained as a butcher and had no initial intention of making wine, despite his parents owning vineyard land. At the age of thirty, he made a sudden change of direction, enrolling to study viticulture in Amboise, and has since devoted himself to the revival of the Jasnières appellation.

The Janviers farm is sustainably managed under lutte raisonnée principles — an approach of reasoned resistance that avoids systemic pesticides and synthetic treatments while working in close dialogue with the specific conditions of each parcel. The soils across their 66 plots range from clay and limestone to sand and silex-rich formations; the presence of flint in certain parcels is a defining feature, as these sites produce wines with an unmistakable gunpowder mineral edge. Their "Cuvée du Silex" bottling comes from the most flint-rich plots.

In the cellar, Pascal's approach is minimal and terroir-focused: hand harvest, native yeast fermentation in stainless steel, no malolactic conversion, and lees aging to build texture without losing the wine's defining precision and acidity. The wines are released relatively young but are built to age, with Jasnières typically considered to peak around a decade after harvest. Pascal is imported in the United States by Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, one of the most respected importers of French natural and artisan wine, cementing the estate's reputation in key international markets.

Wine region

Loire Valley, France

Jasnières is one of the smallest and most northerly appellations in the Loire Valley, covering approximately 160 acres of vineyard on steep, south-facing slopes above the Loir River in the Sarthe department. The Loir — spelled without an 'e', distinguishing it from the larger Loire — is a tributary that flows westward through a landscape of tufa cliffs, rural farms, and scattered vine plots. Jasnières sits within the broader Coteaux du Loir AOC zone, and the two appellations together represent some of the most sparsely planted viticultural land in France, with less than 100 hectares currently under vine for Jasnières and around 200 for the Coteaux du Loir.

These appellations were historically celebrated — Jasnières and the Coteaux du Loir were reportedly the preferred wines of King Henri IV in the sixteenth century — but the combination of a marginal northern climate, economic difficulty, and the devastation of two world wars drove widespread vineyard abandonment through the twentieth century. What little is planted today has been preserved by a handful of determined growers.

The soils of Jasnières are the key to understanding its Chenin Blanc. The combination of clay, limestone, and silex — the local term for the flint that occurs in significant quantities across many parcels — gives the wines a bracing mineral precision and a distinctive note of gunpowder that sets them apart from Chenin from Vouvray, Savennières, or Anjou. The south-facing exposure on the slopes above the Loir ensures maximum sun capture, which is essential given the cool continental climate of the Sarthe. Ripening is slow and the wines retain a natural acidity that makes them among the most age-worthy dry whites produced anywhere in France, with serious examples developing over ten to twenty years.
