Tasting notes

Pale to medium salmon-pink, clear and bright. The nose is fresh and direct, with strawberry, red currant, watermelon, and a light floral note. On the palate, very light-bodied and lively, with bright acidity, juicy red fruit, low tannin, and a clean, slightly saline Mediterranean finish.

BodyFruitTanninAcidity
  • Style: Dry, very light-bodied rosé; primeur in approach — vinified quickly after harvest and released young to preserve fruit and freshness; low alcohol (~10%), crunchy, and built for immediate drinking; closer in character to a light skin-contact rosé than a traditional pale Provençal style
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Grenache Noir; organically and biodynamically farmed on clay and limestone soils in the stony, arid foothills of the Larzac plateau near Montpeyroux, approximately 30km from the Mediterranean; the altitude and proximity to the Massif Central temper the Mediterranean heat and bring freshness that is atypical for the region
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts; vinified quickly in the primeur style at the end of autumn; no fining, no filtration, no added sulfur; bottled and released within the same harvest year
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 46–50°F; no decanting; best consumed within a year of the vintage while the primary fruit is vivid and fresh
  • Pairing: Socca (Niçois chickpea flatbread)
  • Similar to: Tavel rosé at lighter weight, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, skin-contact Pinot Gris rosé from Alsace

Les Cigales dans la Fourmilière La Petite Crapule 2025 is a dry rosé made from 100% Grenache Noir grown organically and biodynamically on the clay and limestone foothills of the Larzac plateau in Montpeyroux, Hérault, in the Languedoc. Produced by life partners Ivo Ferreira and Julie Brosselin, La Petite Crapule is made as a primeur: vinified quickly at the end of harvest, it is released in the same season as the vintage. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is bottled without fining, filtration, or added sulfur. Approximately 10% ABV. Vin de France.

Socca, Japanese edamame with fleur de sel, grilled sardines, ratatouille, charcuterie, melon with ham, fresh goat cheese, tapenade and crudités.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Les Cigales dans la Fourmilière

Les Cigales dans la Fourmilière — "the cicadas in the anthill," a reference to a French folk poem and song by La Rue Kétanou — is the joint project of Ivo Ferreira and Julie Brosselin, life partners and winemakers based in Montpeyroux in the Hérault. They established the label together in 2016, merging their separate vine holdings into a shared 10-hectare estate farmed organically and biodynamically throughout.

Ivo Ferreira was born in Portugal and came to winemaking through a career in wine service, spending formative years learning to make wine with Jean-Marc Brignot in the Jura and with the Amoreau family at Château le Puy in Bordeaux before founding his own Domaine de l'Escarpolette in 2009 in the Languedoc. Julie Brosselin was previously co-owner of Le Petit Domaine in Montpeyroux, gaining experience alongside partners who shared the same commitment to natural farming and minimal-intervention cellar work before joining forces with Ivo.

Together, they work from a shared cellar in Montpeyroux, using a range of vessels — fiberglass tanks, 225-litre and 600-litre barrels, and large foudres — depending on the cuvée. Their shared philosophy is one of low yields, hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, no additions or manipulation during vinification, and bottling without sulfur or with only a minimal addition when the wine's condition requires it. Fining and filtration are not used. Their wines are notably lighter and fresher in style than the Languedoc norm, often at low alcohol levels, and frequently involve creative techniques including co-fermentation of red and white grapes and whole-bunch maceration.

The labels across the range reflect this spirit of play and creativity: Ivo's use Japanese calligraphy by artist Marie-Christine Enshaïan, while Julie's are designed by her sister.

Wine region

Languedoc–Rousillon, France

Montpeyroux is a small village in the Hérault department of the Languedoc, situated at the base of the Larzac plateau where the southern foothills of the Massif Central meet the Mediterranean plain. It sits approximately 30 kilometres from the coast, at an elevation and in a microclimate that moderates the intense Mediterranean heat in ways that lower-lying coastal vineyards do not benefit from. The surrounding landscape is rocky and arid, with garrigue scrub, ancient olive trees, and vineyards planted on stony soils of clay and limestone — the final geological expression of the ancient volcanos and sedimentary formations of the Massif Central.

The combination of altitude, cool northerly winds from the Larzac, and large diurnal temperature variation allows growers in and around Montpeyroux to produce wines with a freshness and precision that stands apart from the broader Languedoc reputation for warmth and concentration. Annual rainfall comes primarily from large summer thunderstorms and significant winter precipitation over the plateau, which replenishes groundwater and feeds the numerous springs that help vines through the region's dry summers. Low yields are a consistent feature of the terroir.

The Languedoc as a whole is France's largest wine-producing region by volume, stretching from the Spanish border at Roussillon in the southwest to the Rhône delta and the fringes of Provence in the east. Despite its scale, the zone contains pockets of very specific terroir — particularly along the Larzac plateau edge, in the Pic Saint-Loup zone, and in parts of the Hérault — where natural winemakers have established some of France's most compelling low-intervention production. The Montpeyroux community of winemakers, including Ivo Ferreira, Julie Brosselin, and associates like Aurélien Petit, has become a reference point within this movement for wines that are lighter, fresher, and more transparent than the Languedoc's traditional image would suggest.
