Tasting notes

Deep ruby with violet edges. The nose offers dark cherry, blueberry, black pepper, a flinty mineral note, and a hint of violets. The palate is firm and focused, with crunchy dark fruit, lively acidity, structured tannins, and a clean, dry finish with good length.

BodyFruitTanninAcidity
  • Style: Dry, medium-bodied red with firm, characteristically tannic structure from the Mondeuse grape; crunchy dark fruit, clean bright acidity, and a focused finish; lighter in alcohol at 11.5% and well-suited to the table at a slight chill
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Mondeuse, an indigenous variety of the Bugey and Savoie; steep limestone slopes above Villebois, Bugey, Ain, eastern France; chemical-free viticulture with occasional biodynamic treatments; hand-harvested, low yields
  • Winemaking: Destemmed; gentle maceration in upright fiberglass tanks; pressed through an old basket press with a rock basin; aged 12 to 18 months in old neutral oak barrels; bottled unfined, unfiltered, no additions, no sulfur added
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 57–61°F or with a slight chill at 55°F; 20 minutes' decanting opens the wine; suitable for near-term drinking as well as a few years of cellaring
  • Pairing: Gratin savoyard
  • Similar to: A northern Rhône Syrah from a cooler site, or a structured natural Savoie Mondeuse from Arbin, with the mineral tension and pepper typical of limestone-grown Mondeuse

La Vigne du Perron Persanne 2022 is a dry red wine made from 100% Mondeuse, produced by François Grinand at his estate in Villebois, in the Bugey region of the Ain. The vines grow on steep limestone slopes above the village and are farmed without chemical inputs. Unlike the Gamay and Pinot Noir in the range, which are fermented whole-cluster, the Mondeuse for Persanne is destemmed before a gentle maceration in fiberglass tanks. La Vigne du Perron Persanne 2022 is then aged for 12 to 18 months in old neutral oak barrels and bottled without filtration, fining, or any additions. 11.5% ABV.

Gratin savoyard, duck confit, grilled lamb chops, Japanese yakitori, charcuterie, wild boar stew, lentilles du Puy with sausage.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

La Vigne du Perron

François Grinand began making wine in 1993 after leaving a position as a piano teacher at a conservatory. He returned to his hometown of Villebois in the Ain with a clear intention: to make wine without industrial inputs on the limestone hillsides he had grown up around. Those early years were difficult. A run of poor harvests led to bankruptcy in 2007, but two Belgian wine enthusiasts who had become devoted to his wines stepped in, purchasing his entire stock to keep the project alive. The domaine was reborn in 2009 and has operated continuously since, now farming around two to three hectares across several parcels on the slopes above Villebois.

The vineyards are worked without any chemical treatments, with the vine training and harvest carried out entirely by hand. Grinand maintains very low yields across all his parcels, and the vines range from relatively young to over 60 years of age. In addition to his own estate fruit, he sources organically farmed grapes from a small circle of trusted growers, most notably a shared Jacquère vineyard in Savoie cultivated alongside Jean-Yves Péron.

Each variety is handled differently in the cellar. Gamay and Pinot Noir go in whole-cluster into upright fiberglass vats. Mondeuse, as in the Persanne, is destemmed to control the grape's naturally assertive tannins. All whites are pressed directly without destemming. After pressing, every wine transfers to old neutral oak barrels, where it ages undisturbed for 12 to 18 months. Since 2010, no wine has left the cellar with any addition whatsoever: no sulfur, no fining agents, no filtration. Grinand approaches the cellar with the same methodical patience he once brought to teaching scales.

Wine region

Bugey, France

The Bugey AOC covers a cluster of hillside wine zones in the Ain department of eastern France, tucked between the Jura massif to the north and the Rhône corridor to the south and west. The region is bounded by Savoie to the east, Beaujolais to the west, and by the headwaters of the Rhône to the south. It is among the more topographically dramatic wine zones in France, with vineyards frequently planted on near-vertical limestone escarpments, hillside terraces, and steep slopes that make mechanized work impossible on many parcels.

Villebois, home to La Vigne du Perron, sits on the bank of the Rhône itself, with its vineyards climbing sharply up the limestone hillside behind the village. The soils here are primarily calcareous scree and limestone rubble mixed with loam, offering good drainage and a mineral substrate that marks the wines clearly. Altitude and aspect vary across the hillside but the combination of limestone and a cool-continental climate with Alpine influence produces wines with firm acidity and considerable structure, regardless of the grape variety.

Mondeuse is the indigenous red grape of the wider Bugey-Savoie zone. In Savoie it has its own named cru in Arbin, where it produces the most structured and age-worthy expressions of the variety. In Bugey, Mondeuse tends toward a slightly lighter, more energetic profile, though the limestone terroir of sites like Villebois gives it a mineral, peppery tension that distinguishes it from Beaujolais or northern Rhône expressions of similar weight. The grape is late-ripening and demands careful canopy management to ripen fully at altitude, which is one reason yields at estates like La Vigne du Perron are deliberately kept low.
