Tasting notes

Ruby with a translucent, light-catching clarity. The nose is precise and Burgundian in character, with red cherry, raspberry, dried herbs, a faint mineral smokiness, and a note of forest floor. The palate is fresh and structured, with fine tannins, bright acidity, and a clean, focused finish.

BodyFruitTanninAcidity
  • Style: Dry, light to medium-bodied Pinot Noir with a bright, mineral character; the 2022 vintage brings more body and structure than earlier Les Étapes releases, while retaining the variety's signature freshness and precision on the palate
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Pinot Noir; steep limestone slopes above Villebois, Bugey, Ain; chemical-free viticulture with occasional biodynamic treatments; hand-harvested, low yields; Vin de France designation
  • Winemaking: Whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts in upright fiberglass tanks; aged 12 to 18 months in old neutral oak barrels; bottled barrel by barrel when ready; unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfur
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 57–61°F; 15 to 20 minutes' decanting recommended; the wine rewards time in the glass and drinks well now, with potential to age a further three to five years
  • Pairing: Coq au vin
  • Similar to: A village-level Burgundy Pinot Noir from a cooler site such as Fixin or Marsannay, or a structured natural Pinot Noir from the Jura

La Vigne du Perron Les Étapes 2022 is a dry red wine made from 100% Pinot Noir, produced by François Grinand at his estate in Villebois in the Bugey region of the Ain. The vines grow on steep limestone slopes above the village, farmed entirely without chemical inputs and harvested by hand. Like all the reds at La Vigne du Perron, the Pinot Noir is fermented whole-cluster with indigenous yeasts in fiberglass tanks, then aged in old neutral oak barrels for 12 to 18 months. La Vigne du Perron Les Étapes 2022 is bottled without filtration and with no additions of any kind. Vin de France, 13% ABV.

Coq au vin, Korean bulgogi, roast chicken, pinot-friendly charcuterie, lentilles du Puy, wild mushroom tart, grilled duck breast.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

La Vigne du Perron

François Grinand's path into winemaking was neither conventional nor straightforward. He spent years teaching piano at a conservatory before trading that career for the hillside vineyards of his hometown of Villebois in 1993. What drew him there was a conviction, already formed before he had the means to act on it, that the limestone slopes above this modest town on the banks of the Rhône were capable of producing wines of real character. The early years brought financial difficulty, and by 2007 he had gone bankrupt. Two Belgian admirers of his wines intervened, buying his entire stock to keep the domaine alive. By 2009 it had relaunched.

Today, La Vigne du Perron covers around two to three hectares of estate vineyards on the limestone escarpment above Villebois, farmed on foot since many of the parcels are accessible only by walking. Grinand grows Pinot Noir, Gamay, Mondeuse, Altesse, and Chardonnay, with each variety assigned to its own distinct parcel, reflecting the diversity of soil and exposure across the hillside. Les Étapes is the estate's Pinot Noir, named for the stages or stopping points on a journey. The Gamay goes into Les Ermitures, named for the wild, grass-covered ground that Grinand maintains instead of bare, herbicide-treated soil. The Altesse is bottled as Sérène Blanche. The Mondeuse becomes Persanne.

The winemaking philosophy is the same across all four reds and whites: no chemical inputs in the vineyard, whole-cluster fermentation for the reds, direct press for the whites, indigenous yeasts, old neutral barrels for aging, and absolutely nothing added at any stage. Since 2010, every wine has left the cellar without sulfur, without fining, and without filtration.

Wine region

Bugey, France

Bugey, in the Ain department of eastern France, sits at a geographical crossroads rarely given adequate attention in discussions of French wine. It is historically affiliated with Burgundy to the north and west, shares grape varieties with Savoie to the east, and sits just north of the Rhône corridor that connects the wider Alpine wine world to the south. This in-between quality has historically worked against its recognition, but for producers focused on terroir-driven, low-intervention winemaking, the region offers conditions of genuine interest.

The Pinot Noir that goes into Les Étapes grows on the same steep limestone hillsides above Villebois that define all of La Vigne du Perron's estate parcels. These slopes face south and southwest, maximizing sun exposure at a latitude where ripening cannot be taken for granted, particularly in cooler years. The soils are primarily limestone with calcareous scree, and the combination of good drainage, mineral subsoil, and the moderate diurnal temperature variation typical of this part of eastern France creates conditions where Pinot Noir can produce wines with genuine structure and precision.

Pinot Noir in Bugey rarely appears in the context of the broader conversation about the variety in France, which is dominated by Burgundy. Yet the limestone soils of Villebois have more in common with those of Marsannay or Fixin than they do with the granite of Beaujolais, and when handled with the care François Grinand brings to the vineyard and cellar, the results sit clearly within the broader tradition of limestone-grown, whole-cluster Pinot Noir. The regional Bugey AOC covers the area, though wines like Les Étapes are released as Vin de France, which allows Grinand the flexibility to bottle when he judges the wine ready rather than conforming to regulated release windows.
