Tasting notes

Pale amber-gold with a natural haze. The nose is mineral and quince-forward: dried quince, white flowers, almond, a mica-schist stony note, and faint nuttiness from lees contact. The palate is precise and dry, with firm structure, vivid acidity, and a long saline mineral finish.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Jean-Yves Péron

Jean-Yves Péron was born in Savoie, left to study oenology in Bordeaux, then spent the years between graduation and his return to the Alps working with producers who were redefining what natural wine meant in France: Thierry Allemand in Cornas and Bruno Schueller in Alsace, two winemakers whose influence runs through every wine Péron makes. He came back to Savoie in 2004 with a precise set of principles: farm organically and biodynamically using horsetail and nettle preparations rather than synthetic treatments; ferment every wine with native ambient yeasts; age on lees without fining or filtration; and add no sulfites at any stage.

The estate is built around micro-parcels gathered over two decades on the steep schist terraces above Albertville and in neighboring valleys at elevations between 1,150 and 1,800 ft. Total planted area is approximately 4.5 hectares, worked entirely by hand, covering Jacquère, Altesse, Roussanne, Mondeuse, Gringet, and a small amount of rare local varieties including Persan and Bergeron. The oldest vines on the estate were planted in 1893.

Péron is one of the few winemakers in Savoie, or anywhere in France, who grows Gringet outside the Ayse appellation and makes a still, skin-contact dry wine from it. The Pierra Menta is produced in very small quantities from a single parcel and represents one of the most unusual expressions of a French indigenous variety currently in production. The decision to give the grape two weeks of carbonic maceration followed by two months of punchdowns was Péron's own experiment, designed to see what Gringet could express when pushed well beyond its conventional sparkling wine format.

His négociant projects, the I Vicini range from Piedmont and the Les Voisins range from Alsace, run in parallel with the estate wines, adding Barbera, Grignolino, Moscato, Cortese, Pinot Gris, and Muscat from Italian and Alsatian organic growers to his annual production of approximately 15,000 bottles across all labels.

Wine region

Savoie, France

Gringet is one of the rarest wine grapes in France. It is endemic to Haute-Savoie, the northernmost of the four departments that make up the Savoie wine region, and is historically associated with the commune of Ayse, near Bonneville, roughly 25 miles north of Chamonix in the Arve Valley. In Ayse, Gringet is the sole variety permitted in the local AOC Vin de Savoie Ayse appellation, where it has traditionally been used to produce light, low-alcohol sparkling wines by the méthode traditionnelle. Outside of Ayse, the variety is almost unknown: total plantings across France number a few hectares, making it one of the rarest grapes in production in the country.

Jean-Yves Péron grows his Gringet on a small south-facing parcel near Conflans, the medieval fortified village above Albertville at the confluence of the Isère and Arly rivers, roughly 20 miles south of Ayse. The soils here are mica-schist, the same friable, mineral-rich rock that underlies most of Péron's estate parcels in this part of Savoie. South-facing mica-schist at altitude, between 1,150 and 1,800 ft above sea level, collects maximum sunlight during the alpine growing season, which compensates for the cool mountain temperatures and allows Gringet to ripen its naturally low-sugar fruit to full phenolic maturity.

The Pierra Menta is named for the mountain peak of the same name in the Aravis chain, visible from the vineyards, which rises to over 8,200 ft and forms part of the dramatic backdrop to the farming and winemaking work below it. The name is a reminder of how physically rooted Péron's project is in its alpine landscape.

In Ayse, Gringet is treated as a sparkling wine grape, harvested early for high acid and low sugar, and given no skin contact. Péron's approach inverts that tradition entirely: later harvest, two weeks of carbonic maceration, two months of punchdowns, and a year in neutral oak produce a wine with the mineral precision Gringet's terroir delivers, but with a structure and depth the sparkling tradition never aimed for.
