Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Jean-Yves Péron

Péron was born in Savoie, trained in Bordeaux, worked with Thierry Allemand in Cornas and Bruno Schueller in Alsace, made harvests in Oregon and New Zealand, then came back to the Alps in 2004 with a clear idea of what he wanted to make and very little infrastructure to make it with. He started in a basement in Chevaline, near Lake Annecy, and accumulated micro-parcels of old vines on the schist terraces above Albertville as they became available, working them entirely by hand.

His total estate is approximately 4.5 hectares, planted with Jacquère, Altesse, Roussanne, Mondeuse, Gringet, and small quantities of Persan and Bergeron. Some of the Mondeuse and Jacquère vines were planted in 1893 and have never seen phylloxera, growing on the naturally resistant mica-schist soils without rootstock grafting. The Altesse vines used for La Grande Journée are among the older plantings on the estate, located in Conflans, and their age is one of the factors that allows Péron to harvest at the advanced ripeness the wine requires without the risk of overripening or losing acidity.

The production of La Grande Journée is very small, typically a few hundred bottles per vintage, making it the most limited release in the estate range. It is also the wine that most clearly demonstrates the aging argument for Alpine Altesse: tasted young, it is intense and demanding; tasted after five years, it has the complexity and depth of a much more famous white wine from a much more famous region. Péron has been making the wine since the early vintages of his domaine and describes it as the cuvée he is most patient about releasing.

Wine region

Savoie, France

Altesse is Savoie's most prestigious indigenous white grape. It is the only variety permitted in the Roussette de Savoie AOC and appears under several named crus within the broader Vin de Savoie appellation. In terms of phenolic structure, natural acidity, and aging potential, it stands apart from all other Savoie white varieties and is capable of producing wines that develop over decades in the right conditions. It is thought to have arrived in Savoie from Cyprus centuries ago, possibly brought back by the counts of Savoie during the Crusades.

The terroir where Jean-Yves Péron grows his Altesse for La Grande Journée is the steep, terraced mica-schist slopes above Conflans, the medieval fortified village built on a rocky promontory above the confluence of the Isère and Arly rivers near Albertville. These terraces, at elevations between 1,150 and 1,800 ft, face due south and receive long hours of direct sun during the alpine growing season, which compensates for the cool mountain temperatures and allows Altesse, a late-ripening variety, to reach the full phenolic maturity that Péron insists on harvesting. The mica-schist soils, friable and mineral-rich with a distinctive iron-mica content, produce wines of angular, precise mineral character that is difficult to achieve on the limestone and clay soils found at lower elevations.

The combination of high-altitude mica-schist, late harvest, and the most extended maceration of any white wine in the Péron range, two weeks of carbonic maceration followed by three full months of punchdowns, produces a wine of unusual structural weight and complexity for Altesse. In conventional Savoie production, Altesse is typically vinified as a direct-press white with stainless steel fermentation, designed for early drinking. La Grande Journée takes the same variety to the opposite end of the stylistic spectrum: age-worthy, oxidative in the best sense, and deeply site-specific in its mineral expression.
