Description

2Naturkinder's Vater & Sohn is a white blend crafted from Müller-Thurgau (77%), Silvaner (14%), and Riesling (9%) grapes. The vineyards are located in Kitzingen and Volkach, within the Franconia region of Germany, and arecharacterized by limestone soils that impart minerality to the wines. The grapes are hand-harvested, foot-trodden, and pressed shortly after. Fermentation and aging occur partly in large oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. The wine remains on the lees until the following summer, enhancing its complexity and mouthfeel. A splash of Riesling is added before bottling to introduce additional aromatic freshness. This blend pays homage to winemaker Michael and his father collaborating on blends together.

Why we like it

Vater & Sohn presents a pale golden hue. The nose offers aromas of quince and citrus, complemented by a subtle natural funk. On the palate, it is light and fresh, with stony minerality and a hint of woodruff.

Wine region

Franconia, Germany

Franconia (Franken), located in northern Bavaria, is one of Germany's oldest and most distinctive wine regions. With over a thousand-year winemaking history, Franconia is celebrated for its unique terroir, traditional grape varieties, and exceptional craftsmanship. The region is defined by its diverse soils, ranging from shell limestone (Muschelkalk) to red sandstone and keuper, which impart a distinctive minerality and structure to the wines. Its continental climate, with warm summers and cool nights, fosters balanced ripening, leading to wines with crisp acidity and concentrated flavors. Franconia's vineyards are primarily located along the Main River and its tributaries, with picturesque towns such as Würzburg, Kitzingen, and Volkach serving as its viticultural hubs.

Franconia is best known for its dry (trocken) white wines, particularly those made from Silvaner, which thrives in the region's limestone-rich soils. Silvaner from Franconia is often regarded as some of the best in the world, showcasing a balance of richness, subtle fruit, and pronounced minerality. Other notable varieties include Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, and Bacchus for whites, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), and Domina for reds.
A hallmark of Franconian wine culture is the Bocksbeutel, a uniquely shaped, flattened round bottle for premium wines. This iconic packaging reflects the region's pride in its winemaking heritage.

Franconian winemakers are deeply committed to sustainability, with many practicing organic and biodynamic viticulture. Producers like 2Naturkinder exemplify this trend, crafting natural wines that highlight the purity and authenticity of the region's terroir. Franconian wines are celebrated for their versatility in food pairings. They complement traditional Bavarian cuisine, such as Schäufele (roast pork shoulder) and Obatzda (cheese spread), as well as international dishes. With its rich history, diverse soils, and innovative producers, Franconia remains a cornerstone of German viticulture and an essential destination for wine lovers.
