Tasting notes

Bright ruby with a clear, translucent rim. The nose is straightforward and appealing: tart cherry, raspberry, a hint of cola, and a faint whiff of cinnamon from the stem inclusion. The palate is light and juicy, with soft tannins, red fruit, white pepper, and a clean, spiced finish.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Field Recordings

Field Recordings is Andrew Jones' personal wine label, which he describes as a catalog of the people and places he cares most about. He founded it in 2007 in Paso Robles, initially as a hobby project with a very small first batch, and has since grown it into one of the more recognizable names in California's low-intervention wine scene, with its own land and reportedly the largest pét-nat production operation in the state.

Andrew got into winemaking sideways. His day job, held for over twenty years, has been as a vine nursery fieldman, planning and planting vineyards for growers all over the Central Coast. That work put him in contact with virtually every serious vineyard in the region, and over time he began noticing certain sites that struck him as genuinely interesting but overlooked: rocky, wilder spots, often closer to the Pacific, farmed carefully by clients who had become friends. When those growers offered him small lots of their best fruit, he started making wine from it. That is still basically how Field Recordings works.

The Wonderwall range was built around those coastal, hard-to-find sites specifically. While the broader Field Recordings portfolio includes the Fiction red blend, pét-nats, piquette, canned wines under Alloy Wine Works, and various single-vineyard bottlings, Wonderwall focuses on cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Andrew's most interesting coastal sources. The house style for Wonderwall involves picking slightly before full ripeness, partial stem inclusion, and aging in French oak with a modest percentage of new wood.

Andrew's long-term ambition is to establish an organically certified vine nursery, which would bring his two professional worlds together in one place. His partner Emily helps with label design across the portfolio, which tends toward bold, graphic, slightly irreverent visuals that match the general tone of the winery: serious about what's in the bottle, relaxed about everything around it.

Wine region

California, United States

Edna Valley is a small AVA in San Luis Obispo County on California's Central Coast, located just south of the city of San Luis Obispo and roughly 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The valley runs roughly northwest to southeast, and that orientation funnels cold marine air from Morro Bay directly into the vineyards from late morning onward, making it one of the coolest wine-growing areas on the entire California coast. The fog that builds overnight typically burns off by mid-morning, but the afternoon breeze returns quickly, keeping temperatures moderate even at the height of summer. The result is a growing season that is long, slow, and well suited to cool-climate varieties like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The valley floor sits at roughly 160-330 ft above sea level, flanked by low hills that protect the vineyards from severe coastal weather while still allowing the temperature-moderating influence of the ocean to dominate the climate. Soils are predominantly clay and sandy loam over volcanic and marine sedimentary rock, with good natural drainage despite the valley's relatively flat topography. The volcanic influence from the nearby Irish Hills and the region's ancient geology contribute a mineral character that shows up in the better wines from here.

Edna Valley was formally recognized as an AVA in 1982. The region has a small number of producers relative to its reputation, partly because the dominant landholdings here have historically been large. Chardonnay, planted extensively beginning in the 1970s and 1980s, remains the most widely grown variety, but Pinot Noir has been gaining ground steadily as producers recognize the valley's suitability for the variety's characteristic balance of red fruit, acidity, and silky structure. The Wonderwall Pinot Noir is sourced from one of the sites in the valley that Andrew Jones identified early in his career as a nursery fieldman, when he was mapping vineyards across the Central Coast before most of the wine world had paid much attention to them.
