Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Barbacan

Barbacan is the family project of Angelo Sega and his sons Luca and Matteo, based on the steep-terraced hillsides of Valgella in Valtellina, northern Lombardy. The name is both a dialect word and a family nickname: barbacan refers to the stone buttresses integrated into the terraced retaining walls that hold the mountainside vineyard plots in place, structures built by generations of farming families before the Segas and now maintained by them as working infrastructure and cultural heritage.

Every step of farming at Barbacan is done by hand. The gradient and configuration of the terraces make any form of mechanical equipment impossible. Grapes are harvested into small baskets and brought down the mountain on foot. The dry-stone walls supporting the terraces are repaired by the family themselves, using the same granite and gneiss rock that defines the soils above and below them. It is farming in the original sense of the word, unchanged in its essential mechanics from how it was practiced here a century ago.

The estate is certified organic. Fermentation across the entire range uses native ambient yeasts from the grape skins and the winery environment, without commercial inoculation. Nothing is fined or filtered. Sulfite additions are kept minimal, and for some cuvées zero sulfur is added. Barbacan is one of the very few producers in Valtellina applying this level of non-intervention at every stage of production, in a region where cooperative winemaking and commercial practices have historically dominated.

The Sol is the estate's single-vineyard expression from their oldest and most established Chiavennasca vines in Valgella, planted in the 1920s and farmed continuously since. It sits between the fresh, stainless-aged Rosso and the extended-aging Fracia Riserva in the estate hierarchy, offering the mineral precision and vine age character of the old parcels with 12 months in large Slovenian oak rather than the multi-year aging of the top wine. The labels across the range are inspired by Neolithic cave paintings discovered in the cliffs above the municipality of Teglio, connecting the Sega family's work to a human presence in these mountains that stretches back thousands of years before viticulture.

Wine region

Lombardia, Italy

Valtellina Superiore DOCG is the highest quality designation in the Valtellina wine zone, a narrow Alpine valley running east to west along the Adda River in the northern Lombardy province of Sondrio. The vineyards line the valley's south-facing slope in a near-continuous band of steep, terraced hillsides, rising from around 980 ft at the valley floor to nearly 2,600 ft on the upper parcels. The Superiore DOCG is divided into five subzones: Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, Valgella, and Maroggia, each with distinct soil profiles, elevations, and microclimatic conditions that produce perceptibly different expressions of Chiavennasca.

Valgella is the easternmost and largest of the five subzones, extending from Teglio toward Chiuro across a series of particularly steep, sun-exposed terraces. The soils here are derived from the disintegration of ancient Rhaetian Alpine rocks: granite, gneiss, and quartz, broken down over millennia into coarse, sandy, free-draining material with very low organic matter and high mineral content. These soils stress the vine, suppress vigor, and concentrate flavors, while the altitude and cool mountain nights preserve the natural acidity that defines Chiavennasca from this valley.

The Sol parcel, where the Barbacan Sol originates, is one of the estate's reference sites within Valgella, planted with vines that date to the 1920s. Vine age matters considerably in Valtellina, where old, deep-rooted plants access moisture and minerals through fractured granite bedrock during the dry mountain summers without irrigation, producing small yields of concentrated, complex fruit.

The Valtellina Superiore DOCG requires a minimum of two years aging before release, one of which must be in oak. This distinguishes it from the entry-level Rosso di Valtellina DOC and places it in a category of wines intended for medium to long-term development. The combination of high natural acidity, fine tannins, and granite-derived mineral structure gives well-made Valtellina Superiore wines a track record for aging across decades, a fact that has only recently begun to register fully with international wine buyers.
