Description

Francesco Cirelli Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is crafted from organically farmed Trebbiano grapes grown in the rolling hills of Abruzzo, Italy. The vineyards benefit from a unique microclimate influenced by the nearby Adriatic Sea and the Apennine Mountains, providing optimal conditions for viticulture. The soil composition, rich in clay and limestone, contributes to the wine's structure and minerality. Cirelli employs minimal-intervention winemaking practices, including spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. The grapes are destemmed and undergo a one-month maceration on the skins in stainless steel vats, allowing for gentle extraction of flavors and tannins. After pressing, the wine rests on its fine lees in steel for four months, enhancing its complexity and texture. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration.

Why we like it

Delicate notes of white flowers and white-fleshed fruits, accompanied by a refreshing minerality. On the palate, it is fresh, mineral, smooth, and satisfying, offering a pleasant and refreshing drinking experience.

Producer profile

Agricola Cirelli

Francesco Cirelli is a winemaker from Abruzzo, Italy, celebrated for his commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture. In 2003, he and his partner Michela established Agricola Cirelli, a 22-hectare certified organic farm near the village of Atri, approximately 8 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea. This strategic location offers a unique microclimate, with the sea's proximity providing a maritime influence that enhances the natural balance of their wines. The estate is dedicated to a holistic approach to farming, cultivating vineyards, olive groves, wheat fields, and livestock. This diversity promotes biodiversity and sustainability, aligning with Cirelli's philosophy of respecting natural cycles. The vineyards are planted with indigenous grape varieties such as Montepulciano, Trebbiano, and Pecorino, which thrive in the area's clay and limestone soils.

Cirelli's winemaking process emphasizes minimal intervention. He employs spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and avoids using oak, opting for neutral vessels like stainless steel tanks and amphorae. Notably, Cirelli has custom-designed amphorae produced by an artisan in Impruneta, Florence, renowned for its high-quality clay. These amphorae feature stainless steel lids to reduce oxidation during fermentation, allowing the wines to express their purest form. The result is a portfolio of wines that authentically reflect the terroir of Abruzzo. Cirelli's dedication to quality and sustainability has positioned him as a rising star in the region, challenging conventions and pushing boundaries in the world of natural wine.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

The viticultural roots of Abruzzo delve deep into ancient history, with civilizations like the Romans laying the groundwork for the region's esteemed wine traditions. Over the millennia, Abruzzo has evolved, absorbing influences from various cultures and trade networks. This amalgamation of historical interactions has solidified its standing in the wine industry, particularly in the realm of organic and natural wine production.

Geographically diverse, Abruzzo's terroir spans from the Adriatic coastlines to the Apennine mountains, resulting in a multifaceted microclimate. The soil, enriched with clay, limestone, and distinct minerals, offers a nurturing environment conducive to grape cultivation. Each sub-region within Abruzzo, whether coastal or mountainous, imparts a unique terroir expression, influencing the region's wine profile.

Montepulciano and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, the region's signature wines, are globally acknowledged for its robust character and depth. Yet, Abruzzo's viticultural spectrum extends beyond this, with white grape varieties such as Pecorino and Passerina holding significance.
