Description

Succés Vinícola's Cuca de Llum is a red wine crafted from 100% Trepat grapes, an indigenous variety of the Conca de Barberà region in Catalonia, Spain. The grapes are sourced from bush-trained vines aged between 20 and 47 years, cultivated at altitudes ranging from 400 to 500 meters on calcareous clay soils. The winemaking process involves spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and a 30-day maceration period with skin contact. The wine is then aged for five months on fine lees in stainless steel vats, allowing it to develop complexity while preserving its fresh and vibrant character. This minimal-intervention approach highlights the Trepat grape's unique qualities and Conca de Barberà terroir.

Why we like it

Cuca de Llum presents aromas of cherry and raspberry, complemented by earthy undertones. The palate is light-bodied with fresh acidity, showcasing red fruit flavors and subtle spiciness, leading to a clean, mineral finish.

Producer profile

Celler Succés Vinícola

Succés Vinícola is a natural wine producer based in the Conca de Barberà region of Catalonia, Spain. Founded in 2011 by Albert Canela and Mariona Vendrell, the winery focuses on indigenous grape varieties, particularly Trepat and Parellada, sourced from vineyards 450 and 700 meters above sea level. The soils in this area are predominantly clay and limestone, contributing to the unique character of their wines.

Committed to organic viticulture, Albert and Mariona practice minimal intervention in the vineyard and the cellar. Their winemaking approach includes spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, no filtration, and minimal to no added sulfites. Succés Vinícola's portfolio features a range of wines, including reds, whites, and rosés. Examples include the La Cuca de Llum, a red wine made from Trepat, and the Experiència Parellada, a white wine showcasing the Parellada grape. These wines are characterized by their freshness, vibrant acidity, and expressive fruit profiles, reflecting the winery's dedication to natural winemaking practices.

Wine region

Penedès, Spain

Penedès is a sub-region located west of Barcelona, in Catalunya, Spain. Penedès is Catalunya’s most important wine district and carries the status of DO, Denominación de Origen. The region is famous worldwide for its main product: the excellent Cava sparkling wine – made with the Champenoise method.

Penedès has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers. The three subregions in which it can be divided, Baix Penedès, Medio Penedès, and Alt Penedès (where Azimut is located) – respectively low, middle, high Penedès, - have slightly different climates due primarily to altitude and distance from the coast. Soils range from calcareous, the prevalent formation, to sandy and clayey.

Red wines are usually blends of native varietals such as Tempranillo, Penedès main red grape varietal, Garnacha (Garnatxa), Monastrell, and Carinena. In recent years, a handful of producers have been experimenting with international varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with good results.

White still wines, in other words, non-Cava white wines, are made from the same native varietals used for Catalunya’s flagship sparkler, Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada. Only recently Chardonnay has been used both in Cava blends and as a still wine, a trend that’s gaining popularity.
