Producer profile

La Cattiva

Masseria La Cattiva is a unique winery located in Sammichele di Bari, in the picturesque Puglia region of Southern Italy. It was born out of the shared passion for natural winemaking by a group of friends, including Leonardo, Alfredo, Paolo, Michele, Loreto, Manfredi, and Marianna. The winery, originally a dairy farm, has been transformed into a thriving vineyard, producing a remarkable selection of wines.

The group, who were former brewers, started experimenting with their own fermentation methods in 2018 and officially revived the farm in 2019. Embracing an organic approach, they ensure all vineyard activities are carried out by hand, using only sulfur and copper as treatments. Their fermentation process is 100% spontaneous, without any addition of sulfites, reflecting their commitment to natural and low-intervention winemaking.

Masseria La Cattiva’s portfolio includes a variety of natural wines, each showcasing the technical expertise acquired from the world of beer brewing.

Wine region

Puglia, Italy

Apulia (Puglia in Italian) is a southern Italian region stretching from the Gargano Peninsula to the very tip of the heel of the Italian boot. It is a major wine-producing region and the first producer of olive oil in Italy—it accounts for over 50% of the total olive oil production.

Apulia can be divided roughly into two parts: the north, characterized by higher altitudes and hilly landscapes, and the south, a flatland known as Salento. Even though culturally different, the two subregions are similar regarding agricultural output. Along with olive oil and wine, we can also find some unique grains and other specific high-quality crops such as onions and artichokes.

Apulian went from producing mostly low-quality bulk wine to a more sophisticated and high-quality production. A major change was lowering the average yield per hectare, a practice that has also been put into law thanks to the creation of several IGP, DOC, and DOCG appellations.
