Producer profile

Fornacella

Fornacella, owned by the Ciacci family and located in the southeastern area of Montalcino, Tuscany, specializes in the production of Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino wines. The estate is indeed one of the few in Montalcino with organic certification. Their vineyards are situated between 300 to 400 meters above sea level, providing a favorable environment for grape cultivation. Their Brunello di Montalcino wine is known for its dry, full-bodied nature with an alcohol content of 14.00%, and it's made from 100% Sangiovese grapes.

The Fornacella estate is relatively small, encompassing just 2.5 hectares in the eastern part of the Montalcino region. The wine from Fornacella has been described as bold and structured, with some vintages receiving favorable ratings from critics, like the 90/100 score from a few reviewers for their Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. The wine is often noted for its red fruit notes, particularly cherry.

For those interested in visiting, Fornacella does accommodate guests for tours and tastings, although reservations are required, and they can cater to groups of up to 20 people. The estate is open for visits on Saturdays upon request, and they provide tours in both Italian and English.

The combination of organic practices, a conducive altitude for viticulture, and the dedicated cultivation of Sangiovese grapes contributes to the distinct quality and character of Fornacella's Brunello di Montalcino wine.

History

Tuscany, nestled in the heart of Italy, is more than a picturesque landscape. It's a realm with profound historical ties to viticulture. The Etruscans, one of the earliest civilizations in Italy, recognized the richness of Tuscan soil. They started the wine cultivation that has flourished for centuries. The Renaissance period further shaped Tuscany's wine narrative. Artisans, poets, and vintners intermingled, creating a tapestry of culture and winemaking.

The evolution of Tuscany's wine industry witnessed various influences. Each era, from ancient to modern times, added layers to its intricate wine story. Today, Tuscany stands as a testament to its enduring passion for the craft.

Terroir

The Tuscan terrain stretches across undulating hills, vast valleys, and coastal areas. Such diverse topography grants Tuscany its unique climate variations. The Tyrrhenian Sea caresses the western edge, instilling a mild maritime climate ideal for grape cultivation.

Tuscany's soil composition is equally varied. From the calcareous clay hills of Chianti to the mineral-rich soils of Bolgheri, each terroir imparts distinctive characteristics to the grapes. Organic wine production has thrived in these settings, reflecting a commitment to natural processes and genuine expression of the land.

Wines

Tuscany boasts a plethora of wines that narrate tales of its rich heritage. Sangiovese is the region's shining star, forming the backbone of iconic wines like Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. These wines capture the very essence of Tuscany.

Beyond Sangiovese, Tuscany has gained acclaim for its 'Super Tuscans' - blends that often feature international varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The surge in natural wine practices has further solidified Tuscany's reputation. Producers are increasingly focusing on minimal intervention, underscoring the region's dedication to authenticity and environmental harmony.
