Description

Borachio Pet Nat is produced by Alicia Basa and Mark Warner in the Adelaide Hills, Australia. Sourcing grapes from organic vineyards, the duo focuses on making natural wines with minimal intervention. Their Pet Nat is crafted using varieties like Savagnin, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and others, fermented naturally with no added sulfites. The sandy soils in their region contribute to the brightness and freshness of the wine, creating a lively and expressive style.

Why we like it

Borachio Pet Nat bursts with lively flavors of grapefruit, citrus, and tropical notes like passionfruit. It’s zesty, slightly funky, with fine bubbles and a refreshing, tangy finish.

Producer profile

Borachio

The poster-children for packing up shop and moving to the country, Mark and Alicia have been at this game for a while now, and it is definitely showing. They are very much a part of a general maturing of the natural wine community, which sees a lot more patience for holding back releases, letting things settle in bottle and it is paying off.

Wine region

Mount Compass, Australia

The Mount Compass wine region, located in South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula, is known for its cool maritime climate, influenced by its proximity to the Gulf St Vincent. The region's rolling hills, with a mix of sandy loam and clay soils, create a distinct terroir that benefits grape varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Savagnin. The cool, breezy conditions help produce wines with bright acidity and fresh, vibrant fruit flavors.

Winemakers in this region often focus on minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to shine through. Mount Compass has gained recognition for its natural wines, such as those from producers like Borachio, which use wild yeast fermentation and sustainable farming practices. This region is still relatively small compared to other South Australian wine areas but is gaining prominence for its artisanal approach to winemaking, making it a key player in the natural wine movement in Australia.
