Tasting notes

This is the anti-Chardonnay Chardonnay: no oak, no malolactic softening, no winemaker fingerprints. The 2019 cooler vintage gave the wine a taut, citrus-driven frame with Meyer lemon and white stone fruit and a silky texture that comes entirely from the grape itself. There is a mineral edge running through it that reflects the sandy, gravel-flecked soils of Cowaramup.

Sam Vinciullo's 2019 Chardonnay comes from his vineyard near Cowaramup, a small town in Western Australia's Margaret River region. The Chardonnay vines sit on the lower reaches of the Valley plot, on sandier soils. 2019 was a cooler vintage, which shaped the wine's lean profile and elevated acidity.

Sam handles every aspect of farming himself. The vineyard is dry-grown and own-rooted, with rye grass and clover cut for green compost to retain soil moisture. No copper is used in treatments. Grapes are hand-selected in the vineyard before harvest.

The winemaking is as minimal as it gets: no oak, no filtration, no added sulfites, no fining. Grapes are destemmed and fermented in sealed open-top plastic vessels with native yeasts. Nothing is added, nothing is taken away. The result is a pure, unmanipulated expression of Chardonnay from one of Australia's most maritime-influenced wine regions.

Works well with simply prepared seafood: grilled fish, oysters, or prawns with lemon. The lean acidity and absence of oak also make it a natural alongside soft fresh cheeses or a light mushroom dish. Serve well chilled at 48-52F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Sam Vinciullo

Sam Vinciullo completed his oenology studies in Adelaide in 2005 and then spent years working in wineries across California, Australia, and Europe. In 2010, he worked with Frank Cornelissen on Mount Etna in Sicily, where his understanding of farming in relation to environment took shape. In 2013 he produced his first wines under the label SRC in Sicily, but was forced out by a financial partner with nothing to show for nearly two years of work. He returned to Australia just before the 2015 harvest and launched the Sam Vinciullo label in Margaret River, Western Australia.

For his first three vintages (2015-2017), Vinciullo sourced grapes from Si Vintners, whose farming philosophy aligned with his own. He then took over a leased farm near Cowaramup, about 15 minutes north of the Margaret River township, where he lived on the property and did all vineyard work himself. The farm is divided into four blocks on predominantly sandy soils with varying amounts of gravel; ironstone rock appears toward the top of the slopes. Chardonnay is planted on the sandier lower section of the Valley plot. Rye grass and clover are grown as ground cover and cut for green compost. Treatments are limited to sulfur and potassium bicarbonate; no copper, no systemic products.

Vinciullo's winemaking approach is non-intervention by principle. Grapes are destemmed and fermented with native yeasts in sealed open-top vessels. No oak is used at any stage. There is no filtration, no fining, no added sulfites. All harvesting and cellar work is done by hand, primarily by Sam alone. His stated philosophy is 100 percent grapes: nothing added, nothing taken away.

Wine region

Margaret River, Australia

Margaret River sits in the far southwest corner of Western Australia, roughly 270 kilometers south of Perth. The region is flanked by the Indian Ocean on the west and north and the Southern Ocean to the south, making it the most strongly maritime-influenced wine region in Australia. Mean annual temperature range is just 7.6 degrees Celsius. The Leeuwin Current, a warm offshore current, moderates temperature extremes and stabilizes the climate, delivering cool sea breezes during the growing season and reliable winter rainfall.

The region's soils are among the oldest geological formations on earth, predominantly gravelly sandy loam derived from underlying granite and gneissic rock. These ancient, nutrient-poor soils keep vine vigor naturally low, which is well suited to quality fruit production. While there are no official sub-regions, Dr. John Gladstones identified six informal areas based on soil and climate differences in 1999: Yallingup, Carbunup, Wilyabrup, Treeton, Wallcliffe, and Karridale. The region gained its Geographical Indication in 1996 and produces over 20 percent of Australia's premium wine despite accounting for just 2 percent of total production. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are the benchmark varieties.
