Producer profile

Fabio Gea

Fabio Gea is a remarkable Barbaresco winemaker known for his unconventional approach and delightful wines. Formerly a successful geologist, Gea shifted gears to revitalize his family's winemaking legacy, inherited from his maternal grandfather Pòtu. The vineyards, once rich in over 200 grape varieties under Pòtu's expert care, had become semi-abandoned until Gea decided to rejuvenate them.

Gea's estate, La Msoira e'L Rastel, symbolized by "The Sickle and the Rake" in Piemontese dialect, occupies about 0.9 hectares of family land and additional rented plots. He focuses on a few lines of Nebbiolo, both within and outside the Barbaresco designation, and small patches of Dolcetto and Barbera. All vineyard work is meticulously done by hand, using minimal copper and sulfur treatments.

In his cellar, Gea's innovation shines. He experiments with homemade porcelain amphoras and uses a mix of older barrels, glass, and stainless steel for aging his wines. With an annual production of around 5,000 bottles across 18 different wines, Gea offers a range from traditional to decidedly avant-garde styles. His dedication to handcrafting each bottle reflects a deep respect for tradition and winemaking innovation.
