Pietraventosa

Marianna Annio, co-founder and winemaker of Pietraventosa in Gioia del Colle, Puglia

On the high limestone plateau of the Murgia, where Primitivo grows slowly and reaches a kind of tense, mineral elegance rarely associated with the variety, Marianna and Raffaele Annio have built one of Puglia's most quietly influential estates.

Backstory

Agricole Pietraventosa was established in 2005. Raffaele, whose grandfather had made wine in the early twentieth century, brought an engineering background and an innovator's mindset to the project. He has designed and fabricated custom fermentation vessels tailored to the estate's specific needs. Marianna leads both the farming and the winemaking, having developed deep expertise in the particular demands of Gioia del Colle's terroir. From the outset the estate was built around organic principles, and ICEA certification followed quickly.

The Region

Gioia del Colle sits inland on the Murge plateau of central Puglia at approximately 380 metres above sea level, a world apart from the sun-baked coastal plains most people associate with southern Italian wine. The cooler temperatures, fractured limestone soils, and significant diurnal variation here produce a Primitivo that is thinner-skinned, lower in alcohol, and significantly more structured than the wines of Manduria or the Salento. Gioia del Colle holds DOC status for Primitivo and has made a strong case for its own distinct identity within Puglia.

Vineyards & Farming

The estate covers approximately 6 hectares under vine, farmed organically from founding. Marianna uses targeted pruning and green thinning to keep yields low, harvesting selectively to ensure fully ripe, quality-driven fruit. The vineyards are planted on calcareous soils rich in active limestone, which drives the mineral character that distinguishes Pietraventosa's wines from richer, warmer Primitivo styles.

Winemaking

Minimal intervention defines the cellar approach. Fermentations are spontaneous, and Raffaele's custom-built vessels allow the team fine control over extraction and temperature without reliance on conventional industrial equipment. The winery is a member of FIVI, the Italian Federation of Independent Winemakers, a commitment that reflects both the estate's independence and its dedication to craft-scale production.

The Wines

The current portfolio includes Allegoria, Ossimoro, and Est Rosa -- wines that emphasize freshness, minerality, and the cool-altitude character of Gioia del Colle Primitivo. Annual production is around 10,000 bottles, keeping quality tightly controlled. The wines have attracted attention from Decanter, Berry Bros. and Rudd, and the Wine Spectator, all noting the distinctive elegance of Primitivo grown at this elevation.
