Canlibero is the work of a couple, Ennio Romano and his wife Mena Iannella, who decided that good wine should taste of where it comes from and nothing else. Their bottles are free-spirited, untamable and electric with energy.
Backstory
In 2011, Ennio and Mena began tending about three hectares of vineyard in the Sannio Beneventano and vinifying their first bottles in Mena's grandfather's cellar. The project has stayed deliberately small ever since.
The Region
The estate lies in Torrecuso, among the gentle hills of the Sannio Beneventano in Campania, southern Italy, a corner of the region long associated with Aglianico and Falanghina.
Vineyards & Farming
They work just over two hectares spread across small parcels, all farmed biodynamically. The varieties are the traditional ones of the area, led by Aglianico, Fiano and Falanghina. The old Aglianico parcel called Turrumpiso reaches around fifty years of age.
Winemaking
In the cellar the approach is as natural as the farming: only wild fermentations, no fining, no filtration and no oenological tricks. The wines are zero-zero, with no added sulfur at any stage.
The Wines
From the old-vine Aglianico of Turrumpiso to vibrant whites and macerated bottlings, Canlibero's range is small but distinctive, prized by natural wine drinkers for its honesty and drive.
