Why we like this wine

This 100% Vinhão delivers dark forest fruit, sour cherry, and peppery spice with the high acidity and firm tannins typical of the grape. Serve well-chilled at 54-57°F; no decanting required. Outstanding with leitão assado (roast suckling pig). Similar to: a fresher, lighter Lambrusco or chillable gamay with more tannic grip.

Product description

Red Vinho Verde was once more common than white—until the 1970s, it dominated the region. Márcio Lopes Rubro 2024 revives this tradition with 100% Vinhão, the most planted red grape in Vinho Verde. Vinhão is a teinturier variety, meaning both skin and flesh carry pigment, yielding wines of deep, almost opaque color. Márcio Lopes farms organically on granitic soils and ferments with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel. The wine retains a gentle frizzante character—tiny delicate bubbles that dance on the tongue. Márcio Lopes Rubro arrives at 11% alcohol, true to the region's light-bodied heritage.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Márcio Lopes

Márcio Lopes was born in Porto in 1983. He spent childhood summers with his grandparents in the Porto hinterland, where they grew corn, wheat, and made wine. At age six, his grandmother placed him in a traditional granite lagar to crush grapes with his feet. That early experience shaped his path.

Lopes studied agricultural engineering, graduating in 2006. A year before finishing, he began working with Anselmo Mendes in Melgaço—one of Vinho Verde's most respected winemakers. In 2008, he traveled to Australia, making wine in Rutherglen and Tasmania. These cool-climate regions deepened his understanding of fresh, vibrant winemaking styles.

He returned to Portugal in 2010 and founded Pequenos Rebentos—Portuguese for "little sprouts." The project started in the Minho region with Alvarinho and Trajadura from the Monção and Melgaço sub-regions. These areas have less Atlantic influence than the rest of Vinho Verde, with cold winters, moderate rainfall, and hot dry summers.

In 2016, Lopes expanded to other indigenous varieties. He began growing and vinifying Loureiro from Ponte de Lima and Avesso from Amarante. He also works with Vinhão, the traditional red grape of the region. Today he farms five hectares of vineyards planted on granite soils. He also sources from selected growers who practice sustainable viticulture without herbicides.

The winemaking philosophy is hands-off. Lopes believes good fruit makes balanced wines that reflect terroir. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in small stainless steel tanks. Many wines see no added sulfites. The results are fresh, vibrant, and true to variety.

Pequenos Rebentos now produces multiple labels: still whites, skin-contact orange wines, pétillant naturels, and red Vinho Verde. Each bottle expresses Lopes's commitment to natural winemaking and regional authenticity.

Wine region

Vinho Verde, Portugal

Vinho Verde is Portugal's largest wine region, located in the far northwest of the country, originally designated in 1908 and recognized as DOC in 1984. The region spans nearly 21,000 hectares of vineyards, representing 9% of Portugal's total vineyard area and approximately one-seventh of the country's wine production. Around 19,000 producers and 600 bottlers produce 85 million liters annually, with 86% of production dedicated to white wines characterized by natural acidity, freshness, and subtle effervescence.

The region is divided into nine sub-regions named after rivers or towns: Monção e Melgaço, Lima, Basto, Cávado, Ave, Amarante, Baião, Sousa, and Paiva. Each offers distinct characteristics based on Atlantic influence and terroir. The climate varies from maritime conditions near the coast to more continental influences inland, particularly in Monção e Melgaço, which produces fuller-bodied wines with higher alcohol content. Soils are predominantly granite-based, fertile with high acidity, creating ideal conditions for indigenous grape varieties.

Primary white grape varieties include Alvarinho, Loureiro, Arinto, Trajadura, Avesso, and Azal, producing wines typically ranging from 8.5% to 12% alcohol. Red wines, though less common, are made primarily from Vinhão, Amaral/Azal Tinto, and Espadeiro. Traditional viticulture included unique training systems like "enforcado" vines grown on trees and pergola systems called "latadas," though modern vertical trellising is now standard.

Historically, Vinho Verde wines featured natural carbonation from bottling before fermentation completion, creating slight effervescence. Modern production often employs artificial carbonation for commercial wines, while premium producers focus on still, dry, single-varietal expressions. The region has undergone significant quality transformation since the 1970s, evolving from predominantly red wine production to sophisticated white wines that showcase terroir expression and varietal character, establishing Vinho Verde as Portugal's premier fresh wine region.
