Fresh, lively palate delivers lemony zing with clean, salty minerality. Serve at 45-50°F. No decanting needed for this pet-nat style wine.

LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
Description

Quarticello Despina is a natural sparkling wine from Emilia-Romagna, Italy, crafted by Roberto Maestri from 100% Malvasia di Candia Aromatica grapes grown on sandy clay soils with gravel deposits. The certified organic 5-hectare estate in Montecchio Emilia follows biodynamic principles, using only copper and sulfur treatments. Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, followed by traditional bottle refermentation using frozen must, creating natural bubbles through ancestral method without filtration or added sulfites.

Tasting notes

Light hay color with persistent fine bubbles and cloudy appearance. The nose reveals aromatic white-fleshed fruit, citrus peel, stone fruits, and flowering herbs with subtle yeasty notes. On the palate, cutting freshness balances bright minerality with slightly sweet character and clean finish.

Food pairings

Perfect with appetizers, tapas, seafood dishes, and Italian antipasti. Excellent aperitivo wine, pairs beautifully with Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and prosciutto di Parma platters.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package gets returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee to be determined based on shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive, we are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to re-route a package after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancelling fee – the amount depends on how big the order is. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat/frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. please let us know should you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Producer profile

Quarticello Azienda Agricola

Quarticello is a family-owned organic winery established in 2001 in Montecchio Emilia, located in the heart of Emilia-Romagna's Val d'Enza region. Founded by Roberto Maestri, who purchased a small vineyard in the area called "Quarticello" that gave the estate its name, the winery has grown from a passionate hobby into a respected producer of natural sparkling wines.

Roberto Maestri, armed with a degree in viticulture and enology from the University of Bologna, began bottling his first wines in 2006 after gaining experience in various local cellars. The estate now spans 5 hectares of sandy clay soils with gravel deposits at the foot of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, certified organic since 2015.

Quarticello specializes exclusively in indigenous Emilia-Romagna grape varieties, including Lambrusco Maestri, Lambrusco Salamino, Lambrusco Grasparossa, Malbo Gentile, Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, and Spergola. The winery follows biodynamic principles, avoiding synthetic chemicals and using only copper, sulfur, and organic fertilizers for vine protection and soil health.

The production philosophy centers on traditional Emilian winemaking techniques, with natural bottle fermentation creating the characteristic bubbles. Wines undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and are bottled unfiltered and unfined with minimal sulfite additions. Roberto's approach respects natural cycles, allowing the authentic character of each grape variety to express the unique terroir.

Quarticello's wines are celebrated for their fresh, vibrant character and food-friendly nature, perfectly embodying the convivial spirit of Emilia-Romagna's rich culinary traditions while maintaining deep respect for sustainable farming practices.

Wine region

Emilia–Romagna, Italy

Emilia-Romagna is one of Italy's most dynamic wine regions, stretching across northern Italy from the Adriatic Sea to the Apennine Mountains. This fertile region, famous for Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and prosciutto di Parma, produces exceptional wines that reflect its diverse terroir and ancient winemaking traditions.

The region's viticultural history dates back to Etruscan and Roman times, establishing a foundation for centuries of wine production. Emilia-Romagna's varied landscape encompasses coastal plains, rolling hills, and mountainous terrain, creating distinct microclimates that influence wine character. The soils range from alluvial deposits near rivers to clay-limestone compositions in hillside vineyards.

Lambrusco dominates Emilia-Romagna's wine production, with several DOC appellations including Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro, and Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce. These naturally sparkling red wines, traditionally made using ancestral methods with bottle fermentation, offer refreshing acidity and food-friendly characteristics.

Beyond Lambrusco, the region produces notable wines from indigenous varieties like Sangiovese, Trebbiano, Malvasia, and Pignoletto. The Colli Bolognesi, Colli di Parma, and Romagna Sangiovese appellations showcase the region's diversity.

Modern Emilia-Romagna embraces organic and biodynamic viticulture, with producers focusing on natural winemaking techniques. The region's commitment to sustainability aligns with growing consumer demand for environmentally conscious wines.

Emilia-Romagna wines pair perfectly with the region's renowned cuisine, from traditional tortellini and ragù Bolognese to aged cheeses and cured meats. The region's sparkling wines, particularly pet-nat styles, have gained international recognition among natural wine enthusiasts, positioning Emilia-Romagna as an innovative force in Italian winemaking.
