Product description

Pierre Frick Riesling Marnes & Loess Macération 2021 is a skin-contact orange wine that redefines Alsatian Riesling through extended maceration. Domaine Pierre Frick sources 100% Riesling from vineyards planted on marl and loess soils—the fine, pale-yellow sediment deposited during the quaternary glacial period. The grapes undergo seven days of whole-cluster maceration with indigenous yeasts before aging 14 months on fine lees in century-old oak foudres. Pierre Frick Riesling Marnes & Loess Macération 2021 is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without any added sulfites, sealed under stainless steel crown cap.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Pierre Frick

Domaine Pierre Frick has pioneered both biodynamic viticulture and skin-contact winemaking in Alsace over five decades. Based in Pfaffenheim in the Haut-Rhin, the estate has been cultivated by twelve generations of the Frick family. Today, Jean-Pierre Frick leads production alongside his wife Chantal and son Thomas, farming 12 hectares across a dozen distinct terroirs.

The family's ecological commitment began in 1970 when Pierre and Annette Frick converted to organic farming. Jean-Pierre adopted biodynamic practices in 1981, achieving Demeter certification in 1986—making the estate one of the first certified biodynamic wine producers in France alongside Nicolas Joly and Eugène Meyer. Sulfite-free winemaking began in 1999, and today approximately 90% of production is bottled without added sulfites.

Jean-Pierre began experimenting with extended skin maceration on white varieties around 2014, starting with Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer before expanding to Riesling. The Marnes & Loess cuvée exemplifies his approach: seven days of whole-cluster maceration extract color, tannin, and aromatic complexity while preserving the grape's inherent freshness. Extended aging—14 months on fine lees in century-old oak foudres—integrates these elements into a harmonious whole.

The domain's commitment to purity extends to packaging: since 2002, all wines are sealed with stainless steel crown caps rather than cork, eliminating cork taint risk and ensuring consistent aging. This unconventional choice reflects Jean-Pierre's practical philosophy—prioritizing wine quality over conventional expectations.

Jean-Pierre and Chantal remain active voices in Alsace's ecological movement. He co-founded the Foire Eco Bio Alsace in 1982, an annual fair now drawing 45,000 visitors, and continues advocating for sustainable farming practices across the region.

Wine region

Alsace, France

Alsace stretches along France's northeastern border with Germany, sheltered by the Vosges Mountains and defined by an extraordinary diversity of soil types. Within this 120-kilometer vineyard corridor, Riesling reigns as the region's most celebrated grape variety—prized for its ability to translate terroir into the glass with remarkable precision.

The marl and loess soils referenced in this cuvée represent two distinct geological layers common throughout southern Alsace. Marl—a calcareous clay—provides water retention and mineral complexity, while loess is a fine, pale-yellow silt deposited by winds during the quaternary Ice Age. This loess layer blankets many lower-slope vineyards, contributing to wines of particular finesse and aromatic intensity.

Pfaffenheim sits in the Haut-Rhin department, approximately 15 kilometers south of Colmar. The village has cultivated vines since Roman times, and its diverse terroirs support both aromatic varieties and Pinot Noir. The Vosges Mountains create a rain shadow that makes Alsace one of France's driest wine regions, with annual rainfall around 500mm—conditions that favor slow, even ripening while preserving natural acidity.

Orange wines—white grapes vinified with extended skin contact—represent a growing category within Alsace's natural wine movement. Producers like Pierre Frick began experimenting with maceration techniques in the 2010s, drawing inspiration from Georgian qvevri traditions and Italian skin-contact wines. The technique extracts phenolic compounds, tannins, and color from the grape skins, creating wines of deeper hue and textural complexity than conventionally pressed whites.
