Pierre Frick Pinot Noir Physalis 2023 is an approachable, fruit-driven red crafted from a blend of Pfaffenheim terroirs in Alsace. Domaine Pierre Frick sources 100% Pinot Noir from multiple calcareous vineyard parcels, vinifying whole clusters to maximize freshness and drinkability. The grapes undergo whole-bunch maceration with indigenous yeasts before aging six months in traditional oak foudres on fine lees. Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Pierre Frick

Domaine Pierre Frick occupies a pioneering position in both biodynamic viticulture and natural winemaking. Located in Pfaffenheim in the Haut-Rhin, the estate has been farmed by twelve generations of the Frick family. Jean-Pierre Frick now leads production alongside his wife Chantal and son Thomas, cultivating 12 hectares across a dozen distinct terroirs.

The family's environmental commitment began decades before natural wine became fashionable. Pierre and Annette Frick converted to organic farming in 1970, and Jean-Pierre adopted biodynamic practices in 1981, receiving Demeter certification in 1986. The estate was among the first three French wine properties granted official organic recognition by the state—alongside Nicolas Joly and Eugène Meyer.

Jean-Pierre started producing sulfite-free wines in 1999, and today approximately 90% of production is bottled without added sulfites. The Physalis cuvée exemplifies his philosophy of allowing wines to express themselves naturally: whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts, no temperature control, no chaptalization, no fining or filtration. Six months of aging on fine lees in traditional oak foudres builds complexity without overwhelming the fruit.

The name "Physalis" references the ground cherry, a small fruit enclosed in a papery husk—perhaps alluding to the wine's delicate, protected character. This bottling represents the estate's most approachable Pinot Noir, blended from multiple parcels to emphasize freshness and immediate drinkability rather than structure and aging potential.

Since 2002, all Pierre Frick wines are sealed with stainless steel crown caps rather than cork, eliminating cork taint risk and ensuring consistent evolution. The estate also holds parcels in three Grand Cru vineyards—Steinert, Vorbourg, and Eichberg—and several distinguished lieu-dit sites.

Wine region

Alsace, France

Alsace stands apart as the only French wine region where Pinot Noir is the sole authorized red grape variety. While the region produces 90% white wines, the remaining 10% demonstrates that carefully selected terroirs can yield distinctive, terroir-expressive reds when farmed and vinified with attention.

The village of Pfaffenheim lies in the Haut-Rhin department of southern Alsace, approximately 15 kilometers south of Colmar. Viticulture here dates to Roman times, with documented cultivation continuing through the medieval period under ecclesiastical ownership. The village sits at the base of the Vosges foothills, where a mosaic of soil types—limestone, marl, sandstone, and calcareous clay—provides diverse options for blending.

Alsace's continental climate brings cold winters, warm summers, and remarkably low rainfall. The Vosges Mountains shelter the vineyards from Atlantic weather systems, creating one of France's driest viticultural zones. These conditions favor aromatic white varieties but also allow Pinot Noir to ripen fully while maintaining the fresh acidity essential to balance.

The Physalis cuvée draws from multiple Pfaffenheim parcels rather than a single lieu-dit, allowing the winemaker to assemble a harmonious blend emphasizing fruit purity and drinkability. This multi-terroir approach produces a lighter, more immediately accessible style compared to single-vineyard bottlings from sites like Rot Murlé or Strangenberg.

Alsatian Pinot Noir has gained recognition over the past two decades as producers demonstrate the variety's potential in the region's calcareous soils. Three Grand Cru sites—Kirchberg de Barr, Hengst, and Vorbourg—now authorize Pinot Noir under Grand Cru designation.
