Why we like this wine

Old-vine Gamay delivers fresh cherry, raspberry, and subtle black tea notes in a light-bodied, dry frame. Serve well-chilled at 54-57°F; no decanting needed—just pour. Saucisson sec makes an ideal companion. Similar to a village-level Beaujolais or an approachable Fleurie meant for immediate enjoyment.

LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
Product Description

Part of a collaboration between natural wine importer Selection Massale and select producers, Olivier Minot La Boutanche Gamay represents accessible, organic Beaujolais from southern vineyards. Olivier Minot, winemaker at Domaine des Charbonnières alongside his wife Corinne, sources 100% Gamay from 90-year-old vines for this cuvée. Semi-carbonic fermentation with native yeasts takes place in concrete tanks, followed by aging in the same vessels. Olivier Minot bottles La Boutanche with minimal to zero sulfur, typically in a one-liter format under screwcap. The playful pig-in-a-Hawaiian-shirt label belies serious winemaking from an often-overlooked corner of Beaujolais.

Producer profile

Olivier Minot

Olivier Minot works as the winemaker at Domaine des Charbonnières in southern Beaujolais, a region that has historically received less attention than the celebrated cru villages to the north. Together with his wife Corinne, Minot has helped bring recognition to this often-overlooked corner of the appellation through organic farming and low-intervention winemaking.

The estate cultivates Gamay vines, some reaching 90 years of age, in the granite-influenced soils characteristic of the Beaujolais terroir. Minot farms organically, avoiding synthetic chemicals and herbicides in favor of practices that maintain soil health and vineyard biodiversity. This approach reflects the broader natural wine movement that has gained momentum in Beaujolais since Marcel Lapierre and Jules Chauvet pioneered minimal intervention techniques decades ago.

In the cellar, Minot employs semi-carbonic fermentation using indigenous yeasts, a traditional Beaujolais method that preserves the fresh fruit character of Gamay. Fermentation and aging take place in concrete tanks rather than oak, allowing the grape and terroir to express themselves without wood influence. The wines are bottled with minimal to zero sulfur additions, maintaining the pure, unadulterated style that defines natural winemaking.

Minot gained wider recognition as the inaugural producer for La Boutanche, a collaboration between natural wine importer Selection Massale and various winemakers. The project aims to deliver high-quality organic wines at accessible prices, typically bottled in one-liter formats under screwcap. Each participating winemaker receives a distinctive illustrated label featuring an anthropomorphic animal character—Minot's is a pig wearing a Hawaiian shirt, a whimsical touch that has become recognizable among natural wine enthusiasts.

While La Boutanche has introduced many consumers to Minot's wines, Domaine des Charbonnières produces additional cuvées that showcase the potential of southern Beaujolais. The Minots continue their work of demonstrating that serious, terroir-driven Gamay can come from vineyards outside the famous northern crus.

Wine region

Beaujolais, France

The Beaujolais wine region, located in the eastern part of France, is an integral part of the Burgundy wine area but maintains a distinct identity due to its unique wine production methods and grape varieties. It stretches from the southern tip of Burgundy to the northern parts of Lyon, encompassing about 55 kilometers from north to south and 25 kilometers from east to west.

Beaujolais is primarily known for its use of the Gamay grape, which is relatively easy to cultivate and ripens early. The region's soils are diverse, with granite predominating in the northern areas and sedimentary rock in the south. This geological variance significantly influences the flavor profile and structure of the wines produced here.

The region is famous for Beaujolais Nouveau, a young wine released annually on the third Thursday of November. This tradition celebrates the end of the harvest. It involves the wine made with carbonic maceration, emphasizing fresh, fruity flavors without extracting bitter tannins from the grape skins.

Apart from Beaujolais Nouveau, the region also produces more structured and complex wines, particularly from the ten Crus of Beaujolais, named areas recognized for higher quality. These crus include Brouilly, Morgon, and Moulin-à-Vent, among others. Wines from these areas are capable of aging and evolving complexity over several years.

Beaujolais wine production is divided into three classifications: Beaujolais AOC, for wines typically light and fruity, suitable for immediate consumption; Beaujolais-Villages AOC, coming from 38 designated municipalities and offering slightly higher complexity; and the aforementioned Cru Beaujolais, from the ten specific areas known for their distinctive and more robust wines.

The Beaujolais region produces approximately 70 million liters annually, accounting for nearly half of all Gamay-based wines globally. Wine growing and production here rely heavily on traditional knowledge and practices, with many growers adhering to natural wine production methods. These practices emphasize minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery to preserve the natural expression of the grape and terroir.

Beaujolais wines are celebrated for their versatility in pairing with a wide range of foods, from light salads to hearty meat dishes. This makes them a favorite among various dining contexts, from casual to refined. The region's commitment to quality and tradition, along with its innovative approach to winemaking, continues to attract interest from wine enthusiasts worldwide.
