Producer profile

De Fermo

De Fermo is a biodynamic winery located in the scenic hills of Loreto Aprutino in the Abruzzo region of Italy. The winery was established in 2009 by Stefano Papetti Ceroni and his wife, Eloisa de Fermo, who both left successful careers in law to dedicate themselves to winemaking. Their estate dates back to the 18th century and includes vineyards, olive groves, and other crops, all farmed according to holistic principles. The farm and vineyards are biodynamic, reflecting their commitment to sustainable agriculture and natural winemaking.

De Fermo's wines are crafted using minimal intervention, with no use of selected yeasts or enzymes, no temperature control during fermentation, and aging in large wooden barrels or concrete vats. Their wines, including Montepulciano and Pecorino, reflect the unique terroir of Abruzzo, offering vibrant flavors with a touch of minerality. The winery's standout bottles, such as the "Concrete" Montepulciano, have earned a reputation for their bright, crisp characteristics, showcasing the balance between fruit and the natural texture of the wine.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo’s winemaking heritage dates back to ancient times, with roots tracing as far back as the Roman Empire, which laid the foundation for the region’s esteemed viticultural practices. The region has evolved over the centuries, influenced by a multitude of cultures through trade and historical interactions. These influences, combined with the local traditions, have helped shape Abruzzo into one of Italy’s key players in the wine industry, particularly renowned for its organic and natural wine production.

The geography of Abruzzo is as diverse as its winemaking heritage. Stretching from the Adriatic Sea to the peaks of the Apennine Mountains, the region benefits from a unique array of microclimates. The coastal areas experience warmer temperatures, while the mountains provide cooler conditions, allowing a range of grape varieties to thrive. The soil, rich in clay, limestone, and minerals, nurtures the vines, with each sub-region offering distinct terroir characteristics that influence the flavor profiles of the wines. The region's diverse topography ensures that wines from coastal and mountainous areas each have their own expression of place, enhancing the complexity of Abruzzo’s wine portfolio.

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, the region’s flagship red wine, is renowned worldwide for its bold structure, deep fruit flavors, and aging potential. However, Abruzzo’s viticultural diversity goes beyond just Montepulciano. White varieties such as Pecorino and Trebbiano are also significant, producing wines that offer fresh acidity, minerality, and complexity. Pecorino, in particular, has seen a resurgence in popularity, celebrated for its crispness and floral aromas.

In recent years, Abruzzo has gained recognition for its dedication to organic and natural winemaking. Many producers have adopted sustainable farming techniques, including biodynamic practices, to reduce chemical intervention in both the vineyard and winery. This focus on organic methods reflects Abruzzo's deep commitment to preserving the integrity of the land, allowing the wines to express the pure essence of their terroir. By minimizing intervention, winemakers ensure that the natural characteristics of the grapes and soils are reflected in each bottle, contributing to the authenticity and individuality of Abruzzo’s wines.
