WHY WE LIKE THIS WINE

This 100% Pineau d'Aunis delivers the grape's signature white pepper spice alongside red berry fruit and floral aromatics. Serve at 57-61°F; thirty minutes of air before drinking allows the wine to open fully. Pairs naturally with canard aux cerises. Similar to lighter Côtes du Rhône reds or spiced Trousseau from the Jura.

Product Description

Jean-Pierre Robinot L'Ange Vin Lumière des Sens 2023 showcases Pineau d'Aunis, a Loire Valley grape that Robinot has championed since establishing his domaine in Chahaignes in 2002. The vines, approximately forty years old, grow on red clay, limestone, and silex soils within the Coteaux-du-Loir appellation. After manual harvest, whole bunches undergo three weeks of maceration before pressing into old oak barrels where the wine rests on lees for extended aging. Jean-Pierre Robinot L'Ange Vin bottles Lumière des Sens without fining, filtration, or added sulfites—fermentation proceeds spontaneously in ancient limestone caves carved into the hillsides.

Tasting notes

Light ruby with garnet tints. The nose opens with white pepper, cassis, and wild strawberry lifted by violet and exotic spice. On the palate, delicate tannins frame bright red fruit with a peppery, mineral-driven finish and notable freshness typical of Loire reds.

Food pairings

Duck confit, pork rillettes, rabbit with mustard sauce, charcuterie, guinea fowl, mild aged cheeses, mushroom tart.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package gets returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee to be determined based on shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive, we are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to re-route a package after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancelling fee – the amount depends on how big the order is. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat/frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. please let us know should you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Producer profile

Jean-Pierre Robinot

Jean-Pierre Robinot's path to winemaking wound through Paris before returning to his native Loire Valley. After discovering wine at age 22—sparked by a bottle of Cheval Blanc 1964—he immersed himself in the natural wine world. A pivotal meeting with Jules Chauvet and Marcel Lapierre in the late 1980s shaped his philosophy entirely. He opened L'Ange Vin, among Paris's first bars dedicated exclusively to natural wine, and co-founded the influential magazine Le Rouge et Le Blanc with critic Michel Bettane in 1983.

After twelve years in the Parisian wine scene, Robinot left the city in 2002 to make wine himself. He returned to Chahaignes, the village where he grew up in the northern reaches of the Loire Valley, and began acquiring vineyard parcels across the Jasnières and Coteaux-du-Loir appellations. Today he farms approximately seven hectares with his wife Noëlla, cultivating just two grape varieties: Chenin Blanc for whites and Pineau d'Aunis for reds.

The estate practices organic viticulture without chemical treatments, relying on natural infusions of wild nettles and ferns. Vineyards sit on red clay, limestone, and silex soils. Fermentation takes place in ancient tuffeau caves carved into the hillsides—some so old their origins remain unknown. Robinot allows wines whatever time they require, with fermentations lasting months or even years. Wines age on lees in old oak barrels until he deems them ready, occasionally spanning a decade before bottling.

All wines bottle without fining, filtration, or added sulfites. Estate wines carry the Les Vignes de l'Ange Vin label, while L'Opéra des Vins designates wines made from purchased grapes. Daughter Juliette represents the next generation at this France domaine. Annual production reaches approximately 20,000 bottles.

Wine region

Loire Valley, France

Stretching over 800 kilometers from the Atlantic coast to central France, the Loire Valley ranks among the country's most diverse wine regions. Often called the Garden of France, this river-carved landscape produces everything from bone-dry whites to luscious sweet wines, crisp sparkling bottles to elegant reds—all shaped by the Loire River and its tributaries.

The northern reaches of the valley, where the smaller Loir River flows before joining the Loire near Angers, contain some of the region's most distinctive appellations. Jasnières and Coteaux-du-Loir sit in this area, producing wines from Chenin Blanc and the rare Pineau d'Aunis grape. These appellations remain relatively unknown compared to famous neighbors like Vouvray and Sancerre, yet they represent some of the Loire's most characterful natural wine production.

Geological diversity defines Loire viticulture. Soils shift from schist and volcanic rock in the west to limestone, clay, and silex (flint) in central and eastern zones. The northern Loire features tuffeau—soft limestone that locals have carved into caves and cellars for centuries. These underground spaces maintain constant cool temperatures ideal for slow fermentation and extended aging.

Climate varies significantly across the valley's length. Maritime influence dominates near the Atlantic, while continental conditions prevail inland. The northern appellations experience cooler temperatures that preserve acidity in both white wines and red wines, contributing to their freshness and aging potential.

Chenin Blanc thrives throughout the Loire, producing dry, off-dry, and sweet styles depending on location and vintage. Pineau d'Aunis, once widely planted, now survives primarily in the northern Loire where dedicated producers maintain old vines. This ancient variety yields light-bodied reds marked by distinctive white pepper spice and floral aromatics—a style found virtually nowhere else in the wine world.
