LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
Classic
  • Style: Dry, medium-bodied red; the younger vines produce a fruit-forward, lively style rather than a concentrated or tannic one; Cabernet Franc in this cool, high-altitude Entre-Deux-Mers terroir delivers bright acidity, red fruit, and the variety's signature herbal note
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Cabernet Franc; dry-farmed estate vines on chalky limestone and clay soils on south-facing hilltops among the highest elevations in the Gironde, Entre-Deux-Mers; certified organic and biodynamic; indigenous yeast fermentation; lunar calendar used for all vineyard and cellar work; hand-harvested, unusual for the region
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; indigenous yeast fermentation in stainless steel vats; stainless steel aging; no chemical fertilizers; light fining and filtration; each parcel vinified separately; the Petite Marie format draws from younger vines for freshness and immediate approachability
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 58–62°F, or lightly chilled to around 55°F; no decanting required; best consumed within 3–5 years of vintage
  • Pairing: Poulet basquaise (Basque-style braised chicken with peppers)
  • Similar to: Chinon from the Loire, Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Saumur-Champigny

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Château Sainte-Marie

Château Sainte-Marie is a 35-hectare family estate in the Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux, on south-facing hilltops among the highest points in the Gironde. The estate's history connects it to the Abbey of La Sauve-Majeure, one of the oldest monasteries in France, and it has been in continuous wine production since at least the nineteenth century. The Dupuch-Mondon family has run the property since 1956, when Gilles Dupuch inherited it from his uncle Édouard Mondon and began raising the ambitions and quality of the estate, eventually serving as President of the Entre-Deux-Mers Growers' Association.

Stéphane Dupuch, fifth-generation winemaker and Gilles's son, took over in 1997 after studying in Montpellier, immediately converting the estate to organic viticulture. He farms with biodynamic principles, follows the lunar calendar for vineyard and cellar work, and uses no chemical fertilizers. Biodiversity is actively encouraged across the property — the estate keeps cattle on AOC land rather than converting it to vines, and Stéphane developed his own bamboo mulching system, using plant material grown on the estate to nourish the soils without importing anything external.

The vineyards are planted by sélection massale on gravel, clay, and chalk, and vine ages range from 10 to over 100 years. The oldest Sémillon vines on the estate are 107 years old — survivors of the catastrophic 1956 frost that destroyed much of Bordeaux. Grapes are hand-harvested, which is uncommon in the region, and each parcel is vinified separately with indigenous yeasts to preserve terroir specificity. The Petite Marie cuvées represent the entry-level expression of the estate, drawn from younger vines for fresh, approachable drinking. The estate's wines are imported in the United States by Beaune Imports and Polaner Selections.

Wine region

Bordeaux, France

Entre-Deux-Mers — literally "between two seas" — is the large triangular zone in central Bordeaux that sits between the Garonne river to the south and the Dordogne to the north. It is one of the broadest appellations in the wider Bordeaux region by surface area, covering a landscape of rolling green hills, vine-covered ridges, river valleys, and historic villages in the departments of Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne. The name refers to the tidal stretches of the two rivers, which behave like inland seas in their lower reaches.

The topography of Entre-Deux-Mers is defined by a series of ridges and hillsides that rise to modest elevations above the river plains. The highest points in the Gironde are found here, and south-facing sites on these elevated ridges benefit from excellent sun exposure, good drainage, and the fresh breezes that come off both rivers. Soils across the zone are varied but commonly include clay, limestone, chalk, and gravel in differing combinations depending on altitude and position.

The Entre-Deux-Mers appellation designation applies only to dry whites, primarily from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle. Red wines from the same zone are labelled under Bordeaux AOC or Bordeaux Supérieur AOC depending on their grape composition, minimum alcohol levels, and ageing. Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot are all permitted for the red wines.

The region has historically been associated with high-volume white wine production, but a generation of quality-focused smaller producers — including Stéphane Dupuch at Château Sainte-Marie — has demonstrated that the zone's elevated terroirs are capable of producing wines with genuine complexity and distinctiveness. The Entre-Deux-Mers Growers' Association has actively promoted denser vine planting and lower yields as a path to quality improvement.
