LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
Classic
  • Style: Dry, light-to-medium-bodied white; the Cortese grape naturally delivers high acidity, delicate florals, and mineral character; the all-stainless-steel approach keeps the wine fresh and aromatic rather than textured or broad; designed for drinking young and well-chilled
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Cortese; estate vineyards on marl and silty-clay soils at 300 metres in the municipality of Tassarolo, Gavi DOCG; certified organic and biodynamic; vineyards worked with heavy horses to minimise soil compaction; the Tassarolo commune sits within the highest and most mineral part of the DOCG zone
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested into small 19kg crates; immediate pneumatic pressing to preserve freshness; indigenous yeast fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel; lightly fined (vegan-friendly) and filtered; minimal sulfur at bottling only
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 46–50°F; no decanting; best consumed within 2–3 years of vintage while floral aromatics are freshest
  • Pairing: Pesto genovese pasta
  • Similar to: Vermentino di Gallura, Greco di Tufo, white Burgundy from Mâcon

Tasting notes

Pale straw yellow with green highlights. The nose is floral and fresh, offering orange blossom, chamomile, white peach, and a citrus thread. On the palate, dry and lively with bright acidity, stone fruit, a waxy mid-palate texture, and a clean mineral and almond-tinged finish.

Food pairings

Pesto genovese pasta, Japanese sashimi, grilled sea bass, fried courgette flowers, burrata with herbs, steamed mussels, fresh ricotta with lemon.

Product description

Orsola Gavi 2024 is a dry white wine made from 100% Cortese grown on estate vineyards in the municipality of Tassarolo, at the heart of the Gavi DOCG zone in southern Piedmont. The soils are marl and silty clay at 300 metres above sea level, and all vineyard work is done by hand, including the use of heavy horses. Produced by Castello di Tassarolo, the grapes are hand-harvested into small crates, immediately pressed, then fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Orsola Gavi 2024 is lightly fined and filtered, with minimal sulfur at bottling. 12% ABV. Gavi DOCG.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Castello di Tassarolo

Castello di Tassarolo is a family estate situated in the commune of Tassarolo in the heart of the Gavi DOCG zone. The Spinola family has been connected to this site since the eighth century and has been making wine from the surrounding vineyards since 1367. The estate currently spans 20 hectares of vineyards, all estate-owned and surrounding the castle, with Cortese as the primary variety alongside Barbera and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon.

The winery is run by Massimiliana Spinola, who took over the estate and, from 2006, began converting the vineyards to organic and biodynamic farming. Organic certification from Bios followed in 2006, biodynamic certification from AgriBioDinamica in 2007. A distinctive feature of the estate is its use of heavy horses for vineyard work, introduced by Massimiliana's former partner Henry Finzi-Constantine, who was one of the first to develop horse-drawn biodynamic farming equipment in northern Italy. Horses reduce soil compaction significantly compared to tractors, and the estate continues this practice today. The winery was awarded the Slow Food Snail in the 2013 Slow Wine Guide, recognising its approach to environmental, territorial, and organoleptic values.

The Orsola label takes its name from Orsola Spinola, a relative of Massimiliana who lived in New York during Andy Warhol's lifetime. Warhol painted her portrait twice — both paintings remain near the winery — and one of these works forms the basis of the label's striking design.

The winery produces its Gavi wines without added sulfur through careful attention to vineyard health and cellar hygiene, a technically demanding approach that Massimiliana and her team attribute to the quality of biodynamically farmed fruit arriving at the cellar in ideal condition.

Wine region

Piedmont, Italy

Gavi DOCG occupies the southeastern corner of Piedmont, in the province of Alessandria, where the Ligurian Apennines give way to the Po plain. The zone covers eleven communes, with the town of Gavi at its historical and viticultural centre, situated roughly 50 kilometres north of Genoa. Its position at the meeting point of Piedmont and Liguria gives the zone a character that blends northern Italy's structure with a coastal freshness: winters are cool, summers are warm and dry, and the maritime influence from the Ligurian coast moderates temperatures and extends the growing season compared to the rest of Piedmont.

The soils across the DOCG are diverse but predominantly calcareous, dominated by marl and silty-clay formations of Miocene marine origin. These ancient seafloor deposits are rich in calcium carbonate and well-drained, and they contribute directly to the mineral and flinty character that defines Cortese di Gavi at its best. Tassarolo, in the northeastern part of the zone, sits at one of the higher elevations within the appellation, with vineyard altitudes reaching around 300 metres. The higher sites tend to produce wines with more pronounced acidity and more defined mineral expression than those on the warmer valley floor.

The only grape permitted under the Gavi DOCG is Cortese, an indigenous Piedmontese variety with a documented presence in the area since at least the seventeenth century. The appellation gained DOCG status in 1998. The strictest tier within the designation is Gavi di Gavi, reserved for wines produced entirely from grapes grown within the commune of Gavi itself. Wines labelled simply as Gavi, as with the Orsola, may source from any of the permitted communes across the broader zone.
