Why we like this wine

This solera-method Chardonnay sparkling wine offers a distinctly oxidative character uncommon in Italian bubbles. Serve at 50-54°F; allow 10-15 minutes in the glass to appreciate its complexity. The wine's nutty, layered profile pairs beautifully with aged Grana Padano. Similar to oxidative-style Champagnes like Jacques Selosse or the multi-vintage complexity of prestige cuvées built on reserve wines.

LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
Guido's Pick
Tasting notes

Deep golden hue with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose reveals toasted almond, dried apricot, honey, and subtle oxidative notes layered with citrus peel. On the palate, profound tension balances richness and acidity, with flavors of quince, hazelnut, and mineral depth leading to a long, contemplative finish.

Food pairings

Tortelli di zucca, aged hard cheeses, roasted chicken with herbs, white truffle dishes, risotto with butter and sage, seafood in cream sauce.

Product description

Alessandra Divella Solera 2014-2020 represents an experimental approach to traditional method sparkling wine. This 100% Chardonnay draws from multiple vintages—2014 through 2020—blended using the solera system more commonly associated with sherry production. The grapes come from organically farmed 18-year-old vines on limestone and clay soils in Gussago, Lombardy. Alessandra Divella ferments each vintage spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in neutral barriques, maintaining the solera fractionally over years. Bottled in 2020, the wine ages 45 months on the lees before disgorgement with zero dosage, unfined and unfiltered.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Alessandra Divella

Alessandra Divella farms two hectares of vines in Gussago, a village at the northeastern edge of Franciacorta in Lombardy. A first-generation vigneron, she took on a 30-year lease of these vineyards—planted to Chardonnay (1.5 hectares) and Pinot Noir (0.5 hectares)—with the goal of producing artisanal traditional method sparkling wines that express her specific corner of the region.

The vineyards sit at 350 meters elevation on limestone and clay soils distinct from those found elsewhere in Franciacorta. Alessandra Divella farms organically, though without certification. She avoids systematic treatments and herbicides entirely, using only copper, sulfur, and Cuban zeolite when necessary. Cover crops grow between the rows, and her aim is to eventually transition toward permaculture practices.

In the cellar, Alessandra Divella takes a non-interventionist approach aligned with natural winemaking principles. Fermentation proceeds spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in cement tanks and used barriques. The base wines age in older oak before tirage, and the finished sparkling wines rest on their lees for extended periods—typically between two and five years depending on the cuvée. All bottles leave the cellar without dosage, allowing the wines to express their terroir without added sugar. Sulfite levels remain below 34 mg/l.

Alessandra Divella chooses not to label her wines under the Franciacorta DOCG, believing that Gussago's unique soils and her handcrafted methods produce wines distinctly different from the broader appellation. Her cuvées carry personal names: Clo Clo honors her Swiss mother Claudia, NiNì her Italian father, and Dady her favorite aunt. Both parents are academics, and Alessandra draws on their influence in her meticulous, detail-oriented approach.

Annual production totals approximately 7,000 bottles—small-batch sparkling wines that have earned comparisons to grower Champagne for their precision, minerality, and uncompromising purity.

Wine region

Lombardy, Italy

Lombardy's Franciacorta region lies in northern Italy, nestled between Lake Iseo and the city of Brescia. In 1995, the area received DOCG recognition for its metodo classico sparkling wines—often considered Italy's closest equivalent to Champagne. Ancient Alpine glaciers carved the landscape here, leaving behind morainic hills and mineral-laden deposits that now define the vineyard terrain.

The northeastern sector of the appellation includes Gussago, where growing conditions differ markedly from other parts of Franciacorta. Limestone and clay dominate the soils in this area—a geological profile that appears less frequently across the broader zone. Vines grow at approximately 350 meters altitude, benefiting from pronounced day-to-night temperature swings that maintain grape acidity while still achieving complete phenolic maturation.

Grape varieties allowed in Franciacorta align closely with Champagne: Chardonnay leads plantings, with Pinot Noir following and limited quantities of Pinot Bianco rounding out the mix. Production regulations mandate secondary fermentation in bottle along with minimum lees aging of 18 months, though many estates extend this period considerably. The finest examples compete directly with premier Champagnes in terms of depth and cellaring ability.

Large houses have traditionally controlled most Franciacorta production, but smaller artisan producers working in a natural wine style have gained ground recently. These winemakers typically farm organically, rely on native yeasts for fermentation, and release their bottles without dosage—letting terroir speak without residual sugar. A number of these producers opt out of the Franciacorta DOCG altogether, choosing instead to label their wines simply as Spumante or Vino Spumante di Qualità as a statement of independence.

Glacial terroir, Alpine climate influence, and rigorous traditional method production combine to give Franciacorta its signature profile: delicate effervescence, vibrant acidity, and a mineral core that sets these wines apart from other Italian sparkling categories.
