Producer profile

Podere Pradarolo

Podere Pradarolo Farm, situated in the scenic Varano de' Melegari in Emilia-Romagna, Northern Italy, presents a unique fusion of history and modern winemaking. Perched between 2here's 500 meters above sea level, the farm overlooks the river Ceno and Fode', a natural south-facing amphitheater. The terrain, marked by Cretaceous clays with interbedded sandstones and limestones, provides a rich foundation for vine cultivation.

Acquired by the Carretti family in 1972, the farm underwent a significant transformation in 1989 under Alberto Carretti's guidance. Originally planned as a cured meat production site, it pivoted to focus on wine, driven by a commitment to produce wines reflective of the local heritage and environment. The PraCarretti's, extending over 60 hectares, dedicates 5 hectares exclusively to vineyards planted in 1989 and 2005.

The Carretti family has maintained a steadfast approach to organic farming, certified since 2004. They adhere to strict natural winemaking principles, such as avoiding using sulfites, relying on native yeasts, and rejecting filtration and stabilization processes. This philosophy extends to prolonged maceration periods, ranging from 30 days to over nine months, allowing for a profound expression of the local grape varietals.

The estate's historical significance is underscored by the villa, which dates back to the 1400s and served as the Serravalle Podesta. The Giordani family's significant renovations in the 1700s added a prestate'sapel dedicated to St. Bernardino of Siena and a time scale. Today, the cellar, transformed from an old barn for dairy cows, continues the family's story of blending tradition with innovation.

Podere Pradarolo's wines are a testament to the rich history and the Carretti family's dedication to preserving and expressing the unique character of their land.

Wine region

Emilia-Romagna, Italy

History

Emilia-Romagna, a pivotal region in Italy, possesses a distinguished history in viticulture. Its vinicultural legacy dates back to ancient times, with both the Etruscans and Romans recognizing the inherent value of the region's fertile terrains.

Subsequently, they initiated the cultivation of vineyards, thereby establishing the foundational pillars of the region's wine legacy. Over time, Emilia-Romagna welcomed various traders and settlers, and their collective contributions further shaped its wine traditions.

Terroir

Geographically, Emilia-Romagna spans from the expansive plains of the Po River to the rugged terrains of the Apennine Mountains. The region's climatic conditions, moderated by the Adriatic Sea, provide an optimal environment for viticulture. Its terroir, characterized by a composite soil structure of clay, silt, and sand, accentuates the uniqueness of its vineyards.

This particular soil composition ensures that grapes cultivated here encapsulate the region's intrinsic qualities, resulting in wines that reflect the true essence of Emilia-Romagna.

Wines

Emilia-Romagna is a repository of diverse wines, with Lambrusco often being the most recognized. However, its offerings extend beyond this effervescent variety. The region's Sangiovese reds are emblematic of its profound wine-producing expertise, while the Trebbiano whites exhibit a distinct lightness and elegance.

With an increasing emphasis on organic and natural wine production, Emilia-Romagna is poised to be at the forefront of contemporary vinicultural innovations, underscoring the belief that wine is not merely a beverage but a narrative of its origins.
