LIGHT BODYFULL BODY

  • Style: Dry, light-to-medium-bodied naturally sparkling red; the ancestral method (pétillant naturel) produces a lively, persistent effervescence alongside the dark fruit and herbal character of the Garrut grape; this is the closest thing to a Lambrusco produced in Catalunya — chillable, food-driven, and built around freshness rather than extraction; the low 12% ABV keeps it easy and the natural CO2 lifts the palate even further; best served slightly cool and enjoyed without ceremony
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Garrut (the Catalan local name for Monastrell/Mourvèdre), a Mediterranean variety historically grown in Baix Penedès and well-adapted to dry, warm conditions; old, low-yielding vines on clay and limestone soils in the Massís de Bonastre, Baix Penedès, Tarragona; organically and biodynamically farmed with fully manual vineyard operations; no synthetic treatments of any kind
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; native yeast fermentation begins in stainless steel tanks and completes in bottle (ancestral method); no added sulfites at any stage; unfined; unfiltered; zero oenological additions — what Partida Creus calls "zero-zero"
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve lightly chilled at 55–58°F; no decanting; invert the bottle gently before pouring to integrate the lees, or pour carefully for a clearer glass
  • Pairing: Pa amb tomàquet (traditional Catalan bread rubbed with tomato and olive oil)
  • Similar to: Frappato Pet-Nat from Sicily, Lambrusco Grasparossa col fondo from Emilia-Romagna, carbonic Mencía from Bierzo in its lighter sparkling red style

Tasting notes

Deep ruby-purple with a natural haze and lively, persistent red foam. The nose is expressive and aromatic, with dark cherry, blackberry, dried thyme, sarsaparilla, earth, and a mineral note from the limestone soils. On the palate, dry and refreshing, with bright acidity, soft tannins, dark fruit, and a clean herbal finish.

Food pairings

Pa amb tomàquet, Japanese yakitori, charcuterie, pizza margherita, grilled sardines, fideuà, lamb skewers, patatas bravas, Vietnamese bún chả, aged Manchego, grilled mushrooms, sobrassada.

Product description

Partida Creus GT Garrut Ancestral NV is a naturally sparkling dry red wine made from 100% Garrut — the traditional Catalan name for Monastrell/Mourvèdre — grown organically and biodynamically on old, low-yielding vines in the Massís de Bonastre, Baix Penedès, Catalunya, Spain. The clay and limestone soils of this coastal upland area produce a thick-skinned, deeply colored grape with genuine Mediterranean character. Massimo Marchiori and Antonella Gerosa of Partida Creus ferment the wine with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, then bottle it before fermentation completes, creating the natural effervescence of the ancestral method. No added sulfites, unfined, unfiltered. 12% ABV.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Partida Creus

Partida Creus was founded in 2001 by Massimo Marchiori and Antonella Gerosa, an Italian couple originally from the Langhe region of Piedmont who came to Barcelona in the mid-1990s as architects. After several years in the city, they chose to leave professional practice and move to the countryside in search of a different pace. They settled in Bonastre, in the Massís de Bonastre within Baix Penedès, on land that would become one of the most closely watched natural wine estates in Spain.

The name Partida Creus comes from the old Catalan term for the crosses used to mark the boundaries between landholdings. It was an appropriate name: the estate itself exists at a boundary between the forgotten past and a new direction for Catalan wine. When Massimo and Antonella arrived, the surrounding countryside was full of neglected and near-abandoned vineyards planted with indigenous varieties that neighbors had deemed worthless — too old, too low-yielding, too unfashionable. Where others saw problems, they saw the raw material for the wines they wanted to make. They began tracking down the owners of these parcels, buying or leasing what they could, and farming everything organically. They were among the first producers in the area to work without any chemicals, which at the time was considered unusual even by local standards.

The winemaking approach at Partida Creus is uncompromising: indigenous yeasts, no additions of any kind, and no added sulfites at any stage — what they call "zero-zero." Their range is built around two-letter codes that identify the grape variety: GT for Garrut, XL for Xarel·lo, SM for Sumoll, BB for Bobal, and so on. The GT Garrut Ancestral is the sparkling version of their Garrut bottling, made using the ancestral method. They also produce a vermouth called MUZ, and over 100,000 bottles annually across the full range.

Wine region

Penedès, Spain

Baix Penedès sits in the southernmost and warmest part of the Penedès wine region in Catalunya, in the Province of Tarragona between Barcelona and Tarragona city. While the broader Penedès DO is internationally known as the birthplace of Cava — Spain's bottle-fermented sparkling wine — Baix Penedès has historically specialized in full-bodied red wines from indigenous Mediterranean varieties. Its Mediterranean climate brings hot, dry summers, mild winters, and limited rainfall, with sea breezes from the nearby coast providing some relief and disease resistance in the vineyard.

Phylloxera devastated the region in the late 19th century and triggered a widespread shift from red varieties to the white grapes now central to Cava production: Xarel·lo, Macabeu, and Parellada. Many of the indigenous red varieties that had defined Baix Penedès winemaking for centuries — Garrut, Sumoll, Cartoixà Vermell, Trepat, Queixal de Llop, and others — were progressively abandoned in favor of these more commercially viable whites, and later in favor of internationally recognized varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

The village of Bonastre and its surrounding Massís de Bonastre, a limestone and clay upland massif within Baix Penedès, have become the unlikely center of a movement to reverse that abandonment. A cluster of small artisan producers based in and around Bonastre has spent the past two decades rescuing old-vine parcels of forgotten indigenous varieties, farming them organically or biodynamically, and making wines with no additions. The soils here — calcareous clay and limestone, poor and poorly irrigated — force low yields and concentrate what little fruit the vines produce. As of the 2025 harvest, the Penedès DO made history as the first wine appellation in Spain with 100% certified organic production across all its members, reflecting a shift that producers like Partida Creus helped initiate.
