Montlouis, an appellation of 400 hectares, is located across the river from Vouvray. Before receiving AOC status in 1937, Montlouis wines were classified under the Vouvray appellation. The soils in Montlouis, similar to Vouvray, are primarily sandy clay on tuffeau, with a slightly higher sand and pebble content, lending the wines a leaner profile and a characteristic lively crispness and minerality.

François Chidaine, who initially worked with his father Yves, embarked on his winemaking journey in 1989. Recognizing the potential of Montlouis and Vouvray terroirs, he expanded his estate to 30 hectares of Chenin Blanc, including many old vines aged 40 to 80. Chidaine is renowned as a leading natural viticulturist in the region and is now committed to regenerative agriculture. This approach aims to enhance CO2 sequestration in soils, involving no-till farming practices that preserve the mycorrhizal networks essential for plant communication and nutrient transfer.

François has fostered biodiversity by planting over 25 plant species among the vines and maintaining permanent cover crops, creating a complex ecosystem for the vines to thrive. His holistic vision focuses not just on producing premium grapes but also on contributing to environmental sustainability. Organic and biodynamic farming practices have significantly improved his soil and vineyard health.

At Domaine François Chidaine, there is a deep respect for the Chenin Blanc grape, known for producing vibrant, age-worthy wines. François is as acclaimed for his vinification skills as his vineyard management. His portfolio includes an entry-level line of Touraine wines—Clos de la Grange Sauvignon Blanc, Touraine Rosé, and Touraine Rouge—which offer exceptional value. Additionally, he produces two sparkling wines: a Méthode Traditionnelle from younger vines in Montlouis and a Petillant from Vouvray vines, both showcasing varied expressions of Chenin Blanc.

Visitors to the expanded domaine can explore La Cave Insolite, a wine shop run by François' wife Manuéla Chidaine. The shop features a carefully selected range of Loire wines and outstanding offerings from small growers across France, representing the diverse talents of this dynamic duo.
