The Wine: Les Foulards Rouges Octobre Rouge 2023

Les Foulards Rouges Octobre Rouge is made from biodynamic and certified organic Syrah grown in a Mediterranean climate on decomposed granite soil in the Languedoc, Southern France.

The Producer: Les Foulards Rouges

Jean-François Nicq spent 12 years crafting wines in the Côtes du Rhône. On January 1, 2001, he teamed up with his childhood friend, Bijan Mohamadi, a former math teacher like their friend Cyrill Sevin, to establish a new domain at the southern tip of the Languedoc. They named it Les Foulards Rouges, "The Red Scarves," drawing inspiration from Frédéric Fajardie's literary works, whom they deeply admired. Their winemaking philosophy is firmly non-interventionist, advocating for minimal interference in both vineyard and cellar. They rely on native yeasts, eschew fining, filtration, and added sulfur, and even employ their mule, Uma, for tillage. The vineyard spans various plots, with decomposed sandier soils on the lower, flatter areas. Higher up, at 100 meters, lie isolated single plots like Frida, Les Vilains, Les Glaneurs, and Grenache, situated on bedrock with minimal topsoil, resulting in denser wines. All vines are perched on the Albères piedmont, characterized by acidic and nutrient-poor soil, less than 10km from the Mediterranean Sea.

The Region: Languedoc-Roussillon
