Producer profile

Matic

Matic Winery, located in the Štajerska region of Slovenia, operates under the guidance of Matija Žerjav, known as Matic. The winery spans nine hectares and focuses on organic and biodynamic farming practices, reflecting a deep commitment to natural winemaking. The vineyards, situated in a mountainous wine zone, benefit from a unique terroir with marl-rich soil, which forces the vines to develop deep roots, enhancing the mineral complexity of the wines.

Matic Winery produces a range of wines using local indigenous varieties like Kerner, Šipon (Furmint), and Pinot Gris. The wines are known for their freshness, minerality, and harmonious flavors. The winery employs traditional methods such as maceration in stainless steel tanks and aging on fine lees in an old underground cellar that maintains a constant temperature throughout the year.

Matic follows the philosophy that healthy grapes lead to good wine. The winery avoids chemicals, using only native wild yeasts and minimal intervention techniques. This approach ensures that each wine authentically reflects the character of the grape and the region.
Notable wines from Matic include the Šipon, which showcases stone fruit and citrus notes with bright acidity, and Mea, a sparkling Pét-Nat made from Šipon, known for its unfiltered, cloudy appearance and vibrant flavors.

Wine region

Štajerska, Slovenia

The Štajerska region, also known as Styria, is Slovenia's largest wine-growing area, forming a significant part of the Podravje wine region. This area, located in northeastern Slovenia, borders Austria to the north and Croatia to the south. The region's landscape features rolling hills and riverbanks, particularly along the Drava River, providing excellent viticulture conditions.

Štajerska's vineyards cover approximately 6,000 hectares and produce about 40% of Slovenia's wine. The region is renowned for its white wines, with Laški Rizling (Welschriesling), Sauvignon Blanc, Furmint (locally known as Šipon), and Riesling being some of the most prominent varieties. The region also grows Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Blanc, contributing to its diverse wine profile.

The terroir in Štajerska includes mineral-rich, well-drained marl soils, and the vineyards benefit from a favorable climate with plenty of sunlight. This combination helps produce wines with excellent acidity, minerality, and aromatic complexity. In addition to still wines, Štajerska is famous for its sparkling wines, particularly from the Radgonsko-kapelske gorice subregion, which has a history of sparkling wine production dating back to 1852.

Wineries in Štajerska often employ sustainable and organic farming practices, reflecting a commitment to preserving the natural environment and producing high-quality wines. This region's rich winemaking tradition, diverse grape varieties, and picturesque landscape make it a notable destination for wine enthusiasts.
