Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Perpetuum II NV

$120

The initial blends of MunJebel rosso classico, crafted by Frank Cornelissen, artfully merged vintages to portray a broader expression of the terroir, a practice rooted in tradition and preferred for its comprehensive representation over singular vintage wines. However, by 2012, Cornelissen shifted towards focusing on single-vintage productions to achieve a more refined precision in the character of each wine. This transition marked a move away from the "old-school" style that characterized his earlier wines.

Despite this change, Cornelissen found himself nostalgic for the depth and classic profile of his original blends. In response, he revived this approach in 2016, employing a perpetual method similar to that used in the renowned solera systems of wine aging. This process led to the creation of MunJebel Perpetuum, a dynamic blend incorporating the 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019 vintages.

Producer profile

Frank Cornelissen

Frank Cornelissen is one of the most famous natural winemakers in the world, consistently making sought-after wines in Sicily, near Mount Etna, from Nerello Mascalese and other Sicilian indigenous varieties.

Wine region

Sicily is Italy's biggest island and region. The Strait of Messina (Stretto di Messina) separates it from the mainland. The capital of Sicily is Palermo, a majestically decadent multicultural city offering one of the richest culinary traditions in Italy.

The history and culture of Sicily are a tapestry of fascinating influences. This complexity is beautifully reflected in the diverse architecture of its cities. In Palermo, for instance, one can witness a unique blend of Arab, Greek, Roman, and Spanish influences, not just in the city's layout but also in its food and local language.

Sicily is Italy's third-biggest wine-producing country, behind Veneto and Tuscany. The quality of Sicilian wines has increased steadily in the past 30 years. Some international grape varietals—mainly chardonnay and syrah—have found a place in Sicilian viticulture, which is traditionally dominated by native varietals such as Nero d'Avola, Catarratto, Grillo, and Inzolia.
